What will go down as a three-set sweep for Plainview was much different in reality - as just eight points separated the Pirates and Falcons on Tuesday night in volleyball.
Class C2 Plainview (4-5) defeated D1's Elkhorn Valley 26-24, 25-22, 25-22 in a match that could have went either way. "The Lady Falcons had their chances to close out a set or two in a close battle at Plainview. If one or two more bounces would have gone our way, it would not have ended in a 3-set victory for the Lady Pirates," said Elkhorn Valley coach Emily Vaughn. "The Lady Falcons started off both the first and second sets making big plays and controlling the tempo but went a little stagnant through the middle of each set, which allowed Plainview some momentum," Vaughn added. The Falcons are now 5-3 on the season and will rest up until this weekend's Scribner-Snyder tournament. Elkhorn Valley Schools will be conducting Homecoming festivities the week of September 21 thru September 26.
The theme this year is “We Will Put You Under the Sea with Our Victory!” The students will be participating in “dress-up” days for the week. Monday will be “Under the Sea”, Tuesday will be “Class Color”, Wednesday will be “Animal”, Thursday will be “Camo” and Friday will be “Green and White Day”. This year's homecoming candidates are Becca Fleetwood & Noah Rutjens, Claire Dittrich & Quin Smith, Dulce Salgado & Tyler Rautenberg, Logan Jensen & Chris Peterson, and Ranee Keehn & Emilio Sierra. Homecoming emcees are Stevey Hatch and David Short and the Kindergarten crown bearers are Jovie Johnson & Colter Austin. Homecoming coronation will be Friday, September 25 at 1:15 p.m. in the gym followed by the football game against Heartland Lutheran at 7:00 p.m. The traditional Homecoming dance is planned to start at 9:00 pm on Saturday. Friday nights away match up with Winside resulted in an impressive first victory for the Falcons.
After 6 touchdowns, including a 51 yard pass, the halftime the score was 40-0. Winside rallied in the second quarter coming up with two touchdowns, but falling to the Falcons with a final score of 52-12. On the night, Tyler Rautenberg had a total of four rushing touchdowns and one passing. This will leave Elkhorn Valley with a record of 1-2 for the season. Their next game will be at home on Friday versus Heartland Lutheran. It was a close game on the road Thursday night for the Lady Falcons.
"Having a different line up last night due to illness and injury the Lady Falcons battled in a very intense match up with NVC rival North Central," said coach Emily Vaughn. After taking the first set, the team fell short on the second and third. The team rallied for the 4th set, tying the game up. "The girls rose to the occasion on this road trip and created their own energy late in the game," Coach Vaughn said, "It took lots of trust and communication when the crowd is so loud and you can not hear each other on the court." The coach was pleased with the team for believing in each other and stepping up their game. However, she said a few too many errors may be what cost them the game. "But overall, we served very aggressively which earned us 11 ace serves." Vaughn said, "We had a very balanced attack and had 4 girls with 5 or more kills." This will result in a 5-2 record for the Lady Falcons. They will be on the road at Plainview on Tuesday to face the Pirates. Elkhorn Valley competed in the O'Neill Cross Country Invite on Friday.
Results have not been submitted at this time. Tuesday night was a good night for volleyball for Elkhorn Valley. The Lady Falcons swept the home triangular, winning both of their games in two sets.
The team took down Elba in the first set with a score of 25-16 and later 25-13 in the second. St. Edward was also no match for the Falcons. The game was won with scores of 25-14 and 25-12. "The Lady Falcons game plan was to create their own energy and keep the tempo quick in their matches," said coach Emily Vaughn. Although she felt the team's serving was good, the coach said there was room for improvement. "Our serving allowed us 12 or more aces in each match, but we are still giving up way too many points on serving errors, which is something we can work on, and improve as the season goes on," Vaughn said. This improves the Falcons' season record to 5-1. They will be back in action Thursday in a road game with North Central. Two Elkhorn Valley runners brought home medals from the Neligh-Oakdale Cross Country Meet on Monday afternoon.
