![]() Turn up the music! The Young Americans are coming to Tilden! Students in grades 3-12 from across the area are invited to attend the workshop, Oct. 12-14. They will learn a fun, high-energy show in less than 3 days! The Young Americans will be performing alongside the participants, but the students will be the ones in front singing, dancing, and performing the variety show and solos they’ve learned. In addition, the students will take classes in the areas of voice, dance, songwriting, and performance (acting and improv). Throughout the entire three days, the Young Americans will focus on the students as individuals. Their goal is to encourage every student to become more confident in who they are and what they’d like to become. Music is the tool used to reach a common ground between age groups, cultures, and peers. The Falcons won 25-18, 25-22, 26-24. "The team had a very balanced attack, but is was Ranee Keehn who connected with the setters the best, totaling 14 kills," coach Emily Vaughn said. "Last night was our best blocking effort, recording eight total ace blocks." Vaughn said Amber Miller (11 points), Liz Osborn (10) and Keehn (8 points) served strong against West Holt. To go along with her 11 points, Amber Miller recorded seven ace serves. "The final set was a test for the Lady Falcons, as we were trailing most of the set," Vaughn said. "When West Holt made a push at the end, going up 22-20, we pushed back. We played to win tonight, and it was a total team effort." Elkhorn Valley students Tucker Hecht and Gracie Halsey passed tests to become Microsoft Word 2013 Certified.
"They both passed it on their first try! Congratulations!" Mrs. Parks said. "Students who have taken Information Technology I have the opportunity to become Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access 2013 certified." She said once a student passes all four exams, they become Microsoft Office Specialist. The Falcons volleyball team moved to 7-4 on the season thanks to a 2-1 weekend on the road.
"This is the first year we have played in the tourney, and I was really happy with our performance the first five sets of the day. But we just didn't have much fight left once we lost the first set against Bancroft-Rosalie," said coach Emily Vaughn. "So that was a frustrating way to end the day, after we had played so well leading up to it. We look forward to some tough competition this week as we face West Holt, EPPJ and CWC." At the Scribner-Snyder tournament on Saturday, Elkhorn Valley defeated Winnebago 25-8, 25-17. Shelby Cakebread was 19-19 serving with 5 ace serves. Against Scribner-Snyder, the Falcons won 25-23, 25-16. Ranae Keehn had seven kills. Alyssa Rood and Liz Osborn each had four kills. The Falcons dropped a 2-0 decision against Bancroft-Rosalie, losing 24-22, 25-10. Elkhorn Valley will travel to Atkinson on Tuesday to take on 5-8 West Holt. Seventeen schools and more than 250 athletes participated in the Boone Central Cross Country Invitational on Friday afternoon, including runners from Elkhorn Valley.
The awards format was different from most meets as medals were awarded according to grades with the top five runners earning medals. Results for Falcon runners have not been received by the ACN. It was a first-half shootout as Elkhorn Valley defeated Heartland Lutheran on Friday for a homecoming victory.
The Falcons scored often early in the game but just as Elkhorn Valley seemed to have the momentum, Heartland Lutheran responded to stay within striking distance. "It was a good game," said Falcons coach Rusty Rautenberg. "Heartland Lutheran has a good team, and they can score a lot of points, but our team persevered, came through and did a nice job." Noah Rutjens rushed for 255 yards on just 16 carries while Tyler Rautenberg added another 182 yards on the ground off of 16 carries. Defensively, Rautenberg had 14 solo tackles. Quin Smith and Rutjens each accounted for 10 total tackles. The Falcons (2-2) will travel to Palmer (1-3) on Friday.
