Charf, who owns Wanek Pharmacy in Neligh, took ownership of Hofmann Pharmacy in Tilden from John Nagengast, a pharmacist from Bloomfield, on June 1. The new name for the pharmacy will be Tilden Pharmacy. She said the idea for purchasing the pharmacy came from her wanting to embrace the potential that she believed the Tilden Pharmacy held. “Probably one of the biggest reasons was to keep the store open, with all the potential it has. The previous owner was probably going to end up closing the pharmacy or selling it to someone else," Charf said. She said that in today’s world, most small-town pharmacies don’t return after being forced to close. “Anymore, in this day and age, when a pharmacy closes, it's probably more than likely not going to come back,” Charf said. After purchasing the store, she began renovating and making changes to the interior of the store. She also said that updated signs and repairs will be made on the exterior of the business. Besides doing a makeover of the interior of the pharmacy, Charf also expanded its gift section, including the addition of Willow Tree, Hallmark and Yankee Candles. She said that she hopes it will mirror what customers are used to seeing in Neligh. “We are going to try and mimic what we do at Wanek’s in Neligh,” Charf said. Although the visual elements of the store have changed, the staff will remain familiar with a few additional faces. Boyd Batenhorst, who has worked at the pharmacy since 1979, will continue as pharmacist alongside Charf and Dave Stearns. Alisha Carr and Darcy Sparr will continue as certified technicians at Tilden Pharmacy. Grace Henn, a 2018 graduate of Pope John High School in Elgin, will work part-time alongside Kristina Hoefer at the pharmacy. Charf got her start as a pharmacist by working for Jim Wanek in the summer of 1998 while Charf was completing pharmacy school. Charf received her bachelor’s degree in business administration/health sciences from University of Nebraska-Kearney. She went on to receive her doctorate from the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). After graduating from UNMC, she worked at the Elgin Pharmacy from 2002 to 2009. In 2009, Charf, along with Jim and Candice Wells, purchased Wanek’s Pharmacy in Neligh. After Jim passed away in September of 2016, Charf purchased the Wells’s share of the business. She said that she is excited to continue to provide the pharmacy’s services to the community of Tilden, and is eager to learn the new faces of the customers. “I’m really excited to get to know people in Tilden. I love meeting new people and I am a definite people person, and it’s just exciting to continue offering pharmacy services in Tilden and allowing that town to have their pharmacy.” A collection of history has been uncovered during the demolition of the Elkhorn Valley School building in Tilden.
During the demolition on Thursday, workers uncovered a sealed time capsule within the building. According to superintendent Keith Leckron, the capsule was found while removing the cornerstone. "The cornerstone of the 1913 building was removed because we are going to save it, and it (the time capsule) was inside," Leckron said. Behind the cornerstone was a sealed copper box. Inside, multiple items were stored, dating up to the construction of the 1913 school building. A copy of the Tilden Citizen, dating July 4, 1913, was one of the pieces inside the box. In the paper, an article, titled "Laying The Cornerstone," talks about the ceremony planned to lay the cornerstone. "The cornerstone of the new school building will be laid on Tuesday, July 8th. The ceremony will be an impressive one and a large gathering is expected to be present." The article also talks about the time capsule being placed inside. "The cornerstone contains a pocket in which will be placed as complete a history of the school district as can be obtained from the existing records, data concerning the local masonic lodge, the names of various public officials, a copy of this paper and possibly a few coins of the period." Curt Qualset, the Technology Coordinator and Football/Basketball Coach for Elkhorn Valley Schools, was amazed by the condition of the documents in the time capsule and how they have lasted for over 100 years. "They way these pages have been preserved is just incredible," Qualset said. As said in the article, many items were included in the capsule, including pictures of different buildings in Tilden, bank statements about the school and a note from the supervisor of Kirkland & Hill, the company tasked with building the 1913 school building in Tilden. A bibe was another item that was a part of the capsule. Written inside the bible is a note, saying the bible would be given to Sophia D. Hill in 1858 from John F. Newhall. The bible was printed in Philadelphia by J. B. Lippincott & Co. in 1856. Elkhorn Valley Schools started construction on the new building in February of 2017. The new high school building sits next to the site of the 1913 building. School will start in the new building in the fall. Protect yourself: learn how to recognize and prevent frauds and scams.
A program will be held on Tuesday, June 5 at 2 p.m. at the Tilden Public Library Lied Auditorium, 202 S. Center St. in Tilden, presented by Ryan Sothan, outreach coordinator - consumer protection division within the Nebraska Attorney General's Office. Everyone, regardless of age, sex, nationality, eduation level, or financial status, is a target for frauds and scams, and education is a key weapon to protect yourself from becoming a victim. This presentation is designed to help Nebraskans recognize the common warning signs associated with scams, what they should do if they or someone they know is a target of fraud, and the measures they can take to substantially reduce, if not eliminate, the likelihood of victimization.
