The public is invited to take a walk down memory lane at Elkhorn Valley School this weekend.
An open house is planned at the school on Saturday, May 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. for those who would like to take a last look at the 1913 and 1922 buildings, which are scheduled to be demolished this summer. Twenty graduates crossed the stage at Elkhorn Valley on Saturday afternoon as the Class of 2018. The gallery has class photos, diploma presentations, fun photos and lots of memories.

Middle and high school student musicians competed for top honors at the 36th Annual Northeast Community College Jazz Festival in the Cox Activities Center on the Northeast campus in Norfolk on March 26 and 27.
The two-day event drew 83 musical groups from Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and South Dakota with over 2,000 students performing. The competition hosted jazz bands and show/jazz choirs for schools in four levels. Twenty trophies were presented at the end of each competition day for first, second, third, and fourth place and solo and instrumental awards. Elkhorn Valley High School’s Jazz Band and Show Choir both earned “Excellent” (II) Ratings at the festival. Margaret Schultz, music instructor and accompanist at Northeast, said the Jazz Festival helps students develop as musicians and shows them what other schools are doing. “It gives them a valuable educational opportunity to perform in front of other students and they look forward to competing again the next year. Pride is visible in these students when they perform. Our Northeast students help work the festival and the Jazz Festival participants find out that they don’t have to be a music major at Northeast to participate in all the musical groups we have here on campus.” The event is sponsored by the Northeast Community College music department and the Norfolk Area Jazz Ensemble (NAJE). NAJE uses the proceeds to support student musicians with scholarships and to promote music activities at the college. Oakdale native and Elgin Public graduate Brandon Grosserode is thrilled to be returning to his northeast Nebraska roots to start the Elkhorn Valley Agricultural Education Program and FFA Chapter.
At an interactive community and student meeting on Monday night, March 26, Grosserode introduced himself and agricultural education to the area. Along with Grosserode were three of his current students from Ansley High School and two current Nebraska State FFA Officers. About three years ago, Elkhorn Valley Principal, Darin Hahne, was first approached by a few community members about starting an agricultural education program at the school. Student interest about the program was then surveyed, but the next hurdle was facilities. This, among other things, Hahne explained, led into the new high school building. “Once we started designing that, it just made natural sense to include an ag room and start the ag program at that time,” Hahne said, “We’re an ag community, an ag area. We’re an ag state. It just makes sense.” As soon as the program was officially announced, Grosserode jumped on the opportunity to apply and familiarize himself with the school and administration. “We definitely did not want to let this opportunity slip away,” Grosserode said about his family in regards to moving from Ansley, where he has been teaching for the past six years. “New opportunities like this here, new program, new facilities, don’t come along in a lifetime hardly, and so we wanted to come in and jump in and make a difference in the Tilden community,” Grosserode said. “We’re going to soar for the sky and get these kids in every opportunity that the FFA organization has to offer.” “As far as [Grosserode] will take us,” Hahne said when asked how far he sees this program going. “I see it being very successful in the future.” Hahne explained that the strong 4-H presence in both Antelope and Madison counties will just feed naturally into building a successful FFA program. During the presentation, Grosserode explained some of the classes he hopes to offer the students at Elkhorn Valley during the 2018-19 school year, including several CASE courses which he hopes will eventually be offered as dual credit science and agriculture courses. Grosserode is certified in four CASE curriculums. CASE is the Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education and is aligned with national Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources, science, mathematics, and English language arts standards for every lesson. CASE courses that Grosserode hopes to offer are Introduction to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources, Animal Science, Advanced Animal Science, and Plant Science. Other courses potentially being offered are Metal Fabrication, Power, Structure, and Technical Systems, Agribusiness, Natural Resources, and Junior High Agriculture. In addition to classes, Grosserode spoke about the multitude of opportunities that students can participate in in the FFA chapter, including Leadership Development Events, Career Development Events, leadership conferences, and state and national conventions. A parent of one of the current FFA members in attendance also shared his experiences as a parent of a child in FFA, explaining how important it is for parents to be involved in the FFA chapter and how much his child has grown through being involved in FFA. The five current FFA members who attended with Grosserode also spoke about their experiences in FFA. Lydia Vinton, Nebraska State FFA Secretary, spoke about the value of an agricultural education program, “We put a lot of focus on career preparation, and so you’re learning skills in the classroom and through FFA, with your [Supervised Agricultural Experience], that you can take and then go put into whatever career you go into.” Grosserode’s current students who were in attendance had nothing but good things to say about the teacher. “He’s a very hands-on teacher. He likes to get kids involved and out in the field so … he’s always pushing us to go on field trips and to conferences and to just learn more about the agricultural field so I think the kids here at Elkhorn Valley really get the experience of the good ag teacher and the knowledge of someone who knows what they’re doing,” said Mikael Harrop, one of Grosserode’s current students at Ansley High School. “Mr. Grosserode is a teacher who is going to be great for the kids. The kids are going to love him. He’s going to work with the kids hands-on. They’re going to get their hands dirty, and they’re going to learn from it,” explained Seth Racicky, another of Grosserode’s students. When asked what the number one thing students in Elkhorn Valley have to look forward to with the addition of the Agricultural Education Program, both of the State FFA Officers, Vinton and State FFA President Jake Judge, spoke about the numerous opportunities that the students will be able to partake in, from contests to community involvement and volunteer hours and from what the classroom has to offer to the professional networking opportunities. “Go get signed up,” Judge said. Grosserode plans to return to Elkhorn Valley to visit with all students at a later date when school is in session. |
