![]() Things have really blossomed since last fall. Monica Hansen of Neligh was at the local craft fair last November when she spotted garden art made from plates. She decided to buy one as a birthday gift for her sister, Yvonne Johnson of Tilden. "We looked it over and decided we could make a few for our own yards," Hansen said. "A couple of hundred later, here we are." She and Johnson started collecting plates and other glassware at garage sales this spring. They've scored a few boxes from consignment stores as well. "After making some for ourselves and our family, we thought we had too much 'stuff' left, so we had a sister's day and I posted a picture on Facebook," Hansen said. "People saw it and thought we were teaching classes, and several asked, so we did!" The two sisters conducted their first garden art workshop at Johnson's home on July 28. Women from all over Antelope County attended, including friends, grandmothers and granddaughters, and mothers and daughters. Johnson started the class with a tour of her gardens and her collection "upcycled" garden art. Attendees were then able to choose from hundreds of plates and other glassware for their projects. Each person left with two homemade items, including plate flowers, bird feeders and bird houses. "The last class was a blast!" Hansen said. Since the initial workshop was limited to 20 participants, several people have asked them to host a second class. The next class has been scheduled for Wednesday, August 20 at 6:30 p.m. and will last 1-2 hours. It will be held at Johnson's home in Tilden, 406 E. 2nd St. The cost is $20. All of the materials will be provided and each participant will create two items of their choice. To register, call Hansen at 887-5230 or Johnson at 368-2243, or send them a message on Facebook. ![]() The "Dog Days of Summer" are near! The Tilden Pool will close for the season on Thursday, August 14, but will reopen a few days later for dogs to take a dip. The pool is open from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, but will only be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Thursday. Daily fees are $2 for ages 12 and under, and $3 for those 12 and older. Dogs are welcome to swim on Saturday, August 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. for a special Dog Swim Day before the pool is drained for the season. Mackenzie Wiseman can't help but laugh about her singing anxiety.
She's so nervous before stepping on stage that she can hardly breathe and has a tight grip on her mom's hand. But once the first note is released, her nerves calm and the Elkhorn Valley senior is at home on stage. And tonight, it's a pretty big stage. The 17-year-old will sing the National Anthem in front of 3,250 people prior to the sold-out Joe Nichols concert at the Antelope County Fair. It's the fourth time in five years she's sang at the fair. She was out of town last year and was unable to attend. "My singing has really changed since that first time," said Wiseman, who is the daughter of Josh and Diane Wiseman of Oakdale. "I was singing to my mom recently, and she said she couldn't believe how much I've improved." Wiseman, who says neither of her parents sings, credits her improvement on dedicating so much time to her love of performing. She's involved in show choir and band and just spent a week at the Young Americans summer camp in Fremont, where she signed up to audition to join the group. The Young Americans is a group that travels nationwide to schools working with students on singing, dancing and performing. They held camps in Tilden, O'Neill and Norfolk last year, and Wiseman attended every one. "It's so much fun, and it does so much for confidence," she said. "It's not easy performing, but there, you're with a lot of people going through the same thing. Everyone understands what everyone is going through." Wiseman, who enjoys singing all music from Italian opera to hip hop, has learned to face her anxiety fears head on. While the minutes before going on stage are nerve-wracking, once she's actually performing, everything is fine. "I focus on one spot, especially at the beginning of the song," she said. "By the end, I'm comfortable in my own skin. There's a lot of things to look at during the song, so it helps to let my mind wander and not focus on perfection." After the fair, Wiseman will shift her focus to starting her final year of high school. While some friends already have senioritis, Wiseman is a little more sentimental about things. At the top of her to-do list this year is singing the national anthem at Elkhorn Valley as a soloist. But what the future holds after graduation is a little up in the air at this point. A lot, she said, depends on how well she auditioned for the Young Americans. If that falls through, Wiseman said she wants to study to become a nurse practitioner. "Different directions, aren't they," Wiseman said with a laugh. "It's just that I don't want to teach choir. I would rather pursue music in a way that inspires. I don't want to tell people how to do things. I want them to develop through inspiration." ![]() While Arlene Hofmann was surprised to be named this year’s Tilden Outstanding Citizen, it probably wasn’t that much of a surprise to anyone else in the community. Hofmann was recognized during this weekend’s Tilden Prairie Days with the honor, which is sponsored by the Tilden Bank. She was told of the award about a week ago. “My first thought was, ‘How nice!’ " Hofmann said. “I’ve been in a lot of organizations over the years, and I look at each one as an education experience. I’ve learned something from each group.” Hoffmann either currently serves on or has served on boards for the Tilden Community Hospital, Elkhorn Valley School Foundation, Tilden Library Foundation, Elkhorn Valley TeamMates, Tilden Hospital Auxiliary and many others. She’s worked with the Cub Scouts and is the financial secretary for the United Methodist Church. But that’s not all she does. Hofmann also plays bridge with five groups in Tilden and Norfolk and enjoys golfing - when she has the time, which is difficult considering her busy schedule. "I am busy, but I enjoy it," Hofmann said Saturday following the parade, which she actually had three floats in - one she rode in, another her granddaughters used to advertise the variety show and the third was her 1957 Chevy for her church. Did we mention her involvement with organizing the variety show? Yes, she loves the Tilden Prairie Days, too. Hofmann has a long history in the community, which is why she said she enjoys giving back. Originally from Odell, Hofmann moved to Norfolk in 1964 with her husband, Chuck, who worked as a pharmacist. They opened Hofmann Pharmacy the next year and owned the business for 45 years. They sold the pharmacy seven years ago. "Tilden was good to my family, and I feel like I can give back and help," Hofmann said. The Hofmanns raised two sons in Tilden, Scott and David. Scott lives in Omaha and is an anesthesiologist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. David is a senior executive in federal accounts for Merck Pharmaceuticals in Kansas City. Arlene Hofmann has five grandchildren. Find yourself in our photos! It's a fun-filled weekend at the annual Tilden Prairie Days and we have lots of photos.
