A program, "Preventing Falls and Improving Balance," is planned at the Raymond A. Whitwer Tilden Public Library on Friday, Nov. 14. Doris O'Brien, Physical Therapist at Faith Regional Tilden Outpatient Center, will present the program at 2 p.m. in the library's Lied Auditorium. The program will be followed by a question and answer period with Justin Young, Director of Faith Regional Rehabilitation Therapies and a representative from Faith Regional Tilden Family Medicine Clinic. Youth outdoorsman, Hunter Charf is in the field hunting with mentors Randy Howser and Mark Eggers. Youth hunters from the area recently had the opportunity to participate in a mentor pheasant hunt. This annual event is sponsored by Pheasants Forever. The Antelope County Shooters Club provided the ammunition for the Oct. 11 hunt. Youth who participated in the event were Colby Harney, Zane Richardson, Danielle Warneke, Bradyn Tschirren, Hunter Charf, Dawson Kaup, Jackson Keetle, Ashton Higgins, Andrew Jacobsen, Caleb Payne and Ashton Shabram. All of the youth had completed a fall hunter's safety course and were selected from the Neligh and Tilden classes. Mentors were Mark Hansen, Ed Hansen, Bill Bailey, Ron Knight, Bill Hanse, Lyle Juracek, Boyd Pedersen, Roger Tillson, Randy Howser, Chris Hansen, Phillip Martin, Mark Eggers, Don Marshall, Tim Steffl, Mike Seier, Dane Nielsen and Jerry Martin. Guest speaker for the event was Ryan Lodge, a Farm Bill Biologist with Pheasants Forever. Nearly 500 students are at the 44th annual Junior High Choral Clinic this afternoon at Elkhorn Valley. Seventeen schools from across Northeast Nebraska are attending the event.
The public is invited to attend the concert performance at 5:30 p.m. in Tilden. Adults are $3, students are $2 and children five and under are free. Participating schools are Battle Creek, Bloomfield, Boone Central- Michele Wright, Clearwater-Orchard, Elkhorn Valley, Humphrey St. Francis, Lindsay Holy Family, Neligh-Oakdale, Newman Grove, Norfolk Catholic, Norfolk Junior High, Pope John, Randolph, Schuyler, St. Michael’s, Wayne Middle School and Wheeler Central. Kathy Huerta-Simpson is the guest clinician and is accompanied by Ginger Bruzek. Huerta-Simpson is in her 10th year as a Director of Vocal Activities at Millard West High School in Omaha after serving in a similar position at Scottsbluff High School for 10 years. She began her teaching career in 1980 at Creighton and subsequently taught instrumental and vocal music at various schools throughout the state. She has appeared throughout Nebraska and the west-central region as a guest clinician, adjudicator and choreographer, and has spent summers as an actor and choreographer in regional theater. Bruzek began accompanying for the Norfolk Jr. High choirs and show choir in the fall of 2011. She is a graduate of Augustana College and has accompanied for many schools and church choirs over the years, in addition to teaching private piano lessons. Elkhorn Valley will play in the D2-4 Subdistrict at Creighton High School on Monday, Nov. 3.
EV was seeded #3 and will play #2 Ewing at 6:30 p.m. A win will advance the Lady Cyclones to the subdistrict final on that night at 8 p.m. Other teams in the D2-4 subdistrict are Stuart and Santee. Elgin Public/Pope John is the only Antelope County team still alive in the Niobrara Valley Conference Tournament. The No. 10 Lady Falcons knocked off No. 7 North Central in three straight sets, 25-15, 25-20, 25-21 in the first round of NVC Tournament action. "We had a good night attacking and found some holes in the North Central defense. The first time we played them this year, we had a lot of unforced errors," EV Coach Emily Vaughn. "Last night we played with much more confidence and this really helped to keep the momentum on our side of the court." In EV's second match against St. Mary's, the Cardinals won in straight sets, 7-25, 11-25 and 13-25. "St. Mary's had a very quick offense that the Lady Falcons struggled to keep up with, but never gave up and continued to play better each set!" Vaughn said. The No. 6 Lady Cyclones swept No. 11 Niobrara/Verdigre, 26-24, 25-17 and 25-18, before falling to the host team in the first NVC tourney game at Elgin. The win advanced Clearwater-Orchard to the quarterfinals to face No. 3 Elgin Public/Pope John. The four-set match went to EPPJ, 25-20, 24-26, 25-19 and 25-16. The Lady Wolfpack earned a spot in the semi-finals on Tuesday to play No. 2 St. Mary's in Bartlett. The game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. No. 5 CWC defeated Neligh-Oakdale (#12) in three sets, 25-13, 25-16 and 25-21, before knocking off No. 4 Ewing 25-20, 25-23 and 25-14. CWC will play top-seeded Stuart in the semi-finals at Barlett Tuesday night. The game is set for 6:15 p.m. The NVC consolation game (for 3rd place) will be played at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31 in the O'Neill High School. The championship game will follow at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Falcons lost Thursday's non-conference Triangular at Pierce to the Lady Dragons of Madison and the Lady Jays of Pierce. Both matches ended with a score of 2-0. In the first match-up of the evening, Elkhorn Valley was taken down by the Pierce Lady Jays. The first set ended with a score of 25-9 and the second was finished with Pierce on top at 25-11. Elkhorn Valley's second game was against the Dragons. The first set ended with Madison outscoring Tilden 25-8. The Lady Falcons were able to fight back in the second set but fell short with an 18-25 loss. Senior Katelyn Bartak of the Lady Dragons proved to be a force to be reckoned with as she led her team with 13 kills. The Elkhorn Valley Varsity Volleyball team finished regular season play with a record of 5-17. The Lady Jays dominated the triangular with a 2-0 win over the Madison Lady Dragons. The score of the first set was 25-11 and the second ended at 25-22. Conference play will begin next week with the #10 Lady Falcons playing #7 North Central in O'Neill on Monday. The game is set to begin at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Mary's gym. Click here for the full bracket. Elkhorn Valley wasn't able to hold back Osceola in the last regular season game of the year. The Bulldogs took a 24-point lead in the first quarter and defeated Elkhorn Valley 64-20. The Falcons moved to 4-4 on the season with the loss and are expected to just miss qualifying for playoffs. First-round action of Class D2 playoffs is scheduled to begin Thursday, October 30. Chris Petersen was grinning from ear to ear as he spoke about being named to All-State choir this week. The Elkhorn Valley junior had good reason to be proud. More than 3,000 students in the state auditioned and only 440 students were selected to be part of the 2014 All-State Chorus. Chris, the son of Bob and Tonya Petersen of Tilden, was selected as a Tenor 2. Brenda Gale is the music director at Elkhorn Valley Schools in Tilden. The 2014 Nebraska Music Educators Association Conference/Clinic concert will be Friday, Nov. 21, at the Lied Center for the Performing Arts on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. The all-state chorus will be directed by Craig Jessop, Dean of the Cain College of the Arts at Utah State University. The band will be directed by Colleen Richardson, Coordinator of Bands and director of the wind ensembles at the Western University in London, Ontario, Canada. Faith Regional Health Services Outpatient Center and Faith Regional Physician Services Tilden Family Medicine are hosting a “Celebration of Health” on Saturday, Oct. 25. The event will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. at Faith Regional’s Outpatient Center, located at 308 W. 2nd Street in Tilden. The event is free to the public and offers a wide variety of free screenings and low cost health services.
