After nearly a year of discussing options to improve facilities at Elkhorn Valley, district residents will have a chance to vote on a proposed $17.2 million plan for a new 7-12 facility.
The Elkhorn Valley Board of Education voted last week to hold a special election in July on a bond that would improve current educational environment for its students. According to Superintendent Keith Leckron, the board considered five different options.
The fifth option was chosen as the best option, Leckron said. This option is a proposed $17.2 million addition to the current elementary school. As it currently stands, the elementary school houses the preschool through sixth grade classes. The addition would add space for the seventh through twelfth grade classes on to the site. This would include some renovations to the existing building as well as a potential wing just for the preschool and kindergarten classes. The choice to add an addition to the elementary school was chosen after months of discussion between the school board and community members. The board chose the addition as the best option and then held community meetings to aid in the discussion. During these community meetings, straw polls were conducted with the community and the results showed that the addition was the most popular choice, Leckron said. The choice to build on a new site for the entire school system was also a popular option. According to Leckron, the board wanted to be as transparent as possible throughout the process and he appreciates the opportunity to get the facts out to the families in the district. "We want it to be a decision based on facts," Leckron said. He said that it was important to the board to have the community involved as much as possible in the process as they want to do what is best for the students at Elkhorn Valley. The bond issue was brought up because changes were needed to the junior high and high school facilities. With growing enrollment, Elkhorn Valley was running out of space and the buildings are beginning to show their age. The current junior high and high school building consists of an original section that was built in 1913 and an addition that was built in 1922. Two additional metal buildings were added in the 1960s and currently house the Family Consumer Science classes, the Industrial Technology classes, and the kitchen and cafeteria. "First of all, we don't have air conditioning in the 1913 and 1922 facilities," Leckron said. "It gets into the upper 80s in August and September, and that is just not a good learning environment." The bond will also give the school district the opportunity to address the safety and technology available to the students. It will give an opportunity to update some things in the current elementary school that was built in 1987, as well as add new technology for the junior high and high school students. If passed, the current junior high and high school facilities would be demolished after completion of the addition. A mail-in vote has been set, with a deadline to vote of July 12. It was decided to be a mail-in vote as the school district consists of families from four different counties. With a majority of the students living in Madison County, the Madison County Election Commissioner will be in charge of the voting process. Ballots will be sent out to all voters in the district approximately 20 days before the deadline, according to Leckron. If the bond issue passes, the district would like to get to work on the changes as soon as possible. A bidding process will take place, allowing contractors and different construction companies the opportunity to get the rights to the job. This process could take several months according to Leckron, as they want to be as thorough as possible and find the right fit to stay within the $17.2 million dollar proposed budget. If everything goes as planned, Leckron stated an ideal starting timeframe would be in the late fall or early winter, weather permitting. Leckron stated he "hopes the voters will do whats best for Elkhorn Valley Schools." For the second year in a row, the Elkhorn Valley Falcons boys are the district champions.
Thanks to a strong team effort in which they medaled in nearly every event, the Elkhorn Valley boys took home the team title, scoring 146 points, 19 more than the next closest team. "A handful of boys medaled here that have not medaled yet this year," said the Falcons head coach, Jeff Meyers. "We came into the season with an older team, but the younger kids have been pushing themselves all year. We have seen PRs in every meet this year." Led by seniors Chris Petersen and Noah Rutjens, Elkhorn Valley used an extremely well rounded performance to take the medal. Peterson took home second in the shot put, as well as third in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dash. Rutjen won the triple jump, long jump, and finished third in the high jump. Both are members of the first place 4x100 meter relay team, along with Tyler Rautenberg and Brayden Effle. Effle also took home gold in the 300 meter hurdles. "It feels great," Rutjens said. "I'm really proud to be a part of history." The Falcon girls also had a strong day, finishing third in the team standings. They were lead by Amber Miller, who took home first in the triple jump. Ranee Keehn also had a strong day, taking third in the triple jump and fourth in both the 400 meter dash and the 300 hurdles. "Our kids will go into state with a lot of confidence," Said Coach Meyers. "I have so much confidence in them and they have so much confidence in themselves." When asked how it feels to be heading back to the state meet, Petersen said "We just want to go down and get medals and set PRs. As a senior, you just want to go out on top." Peterson had one last thought regarding the teams success. "Back to back championships is an honor. It's an honor to be a Falcon." Boys Team Results 1. Elkhorn Valley, 146 2. North Central, 127 3. On March 29th, Sheila O’Brien, RN, was inducted into Nebraska Methodist College’s Student Writer’s Honor Society in Omaha. Ms. O’Brien is currently attending Nebraska Methodist College’s Nurse Educator Program to obtain her Master’s of Science degree in Nursing. One of her education classes was about different teaching methods and required a presentation to be given. She chose to present a simulation about communication in nursing ‒ during shift changes. Her professor later submitted her article about the simulation to NMC’s Writing Across the Curriculum Committee. Ms. O’Brien’s article was later chosen to win the grand prize at the graduate level. “I was honored that my professor chose to submit my article to the Writer’s Across the Curriculum Committee,” said Ms. O’Brien. “I was also very surprised and honored to win this special award.” I owe my nursing skills to my co-workers at Antelope Memorial Hospital, added Ms. O’Brien. They’ve always been supportive in helping me to learn and become a better nurse. I learned a great deal working at AMH ‒ it’s truly a special place to work. I plan to continue my employment there ‒ on an on-call status. “In 2015, Sheila played a key role in the implementation of bedside reporting at Antelope Memorial Hospital,” said Merry Sprout, RN and AMH Director of Nursing. “Bedside reporting is designed to be inclusive of the patient ‒ making him/her a part of the reporting process.” In February, Ms. O’Brien took on the role as nursing instructor at Northeast Community College. She will continue to serve as NECC’s clinical instructor for nursing students at the AMH location. Sheila resides in rural Tilden. She and her finance, Keith Meyer of Orchard, are engaged to be married on June 10, 2017. Mr. Meyer is employed at Sanne’s Service in Clearwater as a mechanic. Her parents are Ed and Ruth O’Brien of rural Tilden. Her siblings include one sister, Sarah Luebe, and four brothers, Eddie, Mark, Billy and Joe. She is a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s Catholic Church in Tilden. Her hobbies include spending time with her nephew, Matthew Luebe, and fixing up her new home. She will graduate from Nebraska Methodist College in May 2017 with her master’s in Nursing. Do you know a local woman who plays a vital role in agriculture? If so, nominate her for the AG-ceptional Woman of the Year Award.
The United States Department of Agriculture’s Census of Agriculture reports that the number of farms operated by women nearly tripled from 1978 to 2007 and the statistic continues to rise. Northeast Community College recognizes the vital role that women play in agriculture and honors one individual each year during its AG-ceptional Women’s Conference. Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2016 AG-ceptional Woman of the Year Award, which will be presented during the 2016 AG-ceptional Women’s Conference on Friday, November 18, in the Lifelong Learning Center at Northeast Community College here. The recipient will be featured in a video tribute sponsored by Farm Credit Services of America. Corinne Morris, dean of Agriculture, Math and Science, said she looks forward to honoring all women in agriculture during the annual event. “This will be our 8th annual conference and it never ceases to amaze me what these women can achieve. At Northeast Community College, we recognize the contributions women make as advocates for agriculture, in their own operations, and in their communities. They make a difference and we want to provide a day to educate, motivate and celebrate these special people. The AG-ceptional Woman of the Year Award draws attention to the importance of their role in agriculture. We encourage you to nominate a deserving woman in agriculture for this award.” Karen Grant, Meadow Grove, was honored as the 2015 AG-ceptional Woman of the Year for her dedication, strength, skills and influence in agriculture. Her daughter, Kristen, made her feel special by taking the time and effort to nominate her for the award. “The fact that my daughter and family felt I was deserving of the award is heartwarming. I have a new spring in my step and I know I am appreciated,” Grant said. “Receiving this honor in front of my peers at the conference has provided me a new dimension of appreciation and respect. There are so many women deserving of this award; I hope others will take the initiative to nominate and honor their mom or friend.” Past AG-ceptional Woman of the Year honorees include: Bonnie Schulz, Battle Creek, in 2010; Jan Miller, Belden, in 2011; Nancy Kirkholm, Homer, in 2012; Jan Frenzen, Fullerton, in 2013 and Dawn Winkelbauer, Norfolk, in 2014. The deadline for nominating the 2016 AG-ceptional Woman of the Year recipient is May 1. Nomination forms may be accessed at: www.northeast.edu/agceptional. Chris Petersen signed a national letter of intent to wrestle for Doane College on Wednesday. The senior is the son of Bob and Tonya Petersen and will graduate from Elkhorn Valley in May. He will be majoring in elementary education at Doane in the fall. In addition to wrestling for the Doane Tigers, Petersen has also been accepted in the Hensen Leadership Program and choir program. “I am most excited about achieving my goals, short-term and long-term. It’s truly a pleasure to be going to Doane. I love the wrestling coach and the choir director there. I am really involved in wrestling and choir here, and it was really important to me for that to be a good aspect in the college.” Thad Dodd, athletic recruiter for Doane, said they are excited to have Petersen join the Doane family. “The first time I met Chris is when he came down for a visit and I was thoroughly impressed with him. Chris is one of the best individuals I have ever met before in my life,” Dodd said. “He’s a great kid, great wrestler and a great singer. We are really excited as a Doane family to have him come down in the fall.” An Elkhorn Valley sophomore finish sixth on Saturday at state FBLA.
