Present were citizens interested in helping to make sure the public was well informed of the reasons behind the upcoming school bond issue to be held in early July. The proposal is to build a new 7-12th grade addition on the current site to replace the well maintained, but yet 100 year old high school. The addition attached to the south and east of the current K-6 building would allow for construction to begin while classes could still be held in the old building. Then the old structure would be raised and the area used primarily for a playground and parking area. The committee worked towards preparing an informational mailer to be distributed very soon to the public. This would include explanations to numerous frequently asked questions about the project. The mailer is planned to be distributed next week. The committee was also provided with a presentation from the architects who explained the proposed floor plan of the structure and efficiencies designed into the building. They also discussed the improved security measures that the new facility would offer our students and staff. They made it clear that plans are flexible yet and they would look to the public and faculty for ideas that might improve their proposed design. The committee also is reaching out to any group that would like a presentation of information regarding the upcoming decision and related vote. Chairman Ross Tegeler said he would make sure that any such group interested would be accommodated in the future. “Our hope and intent is that every voting citizen has had their questions and concerns answered well before the ballots must be received at the Madison County Courthouse on July 12”, stated Chairman Tegeler. The County has required that a mail in ballot must be used, which will be sent to all registered voters, then returned by voters of the district, and received no later than July 12. A group of interested citizens held a meeting regarding the upcoming school bond decision on July 12 at the Meadow Fire Hall last week.
The group decided to form the “Building FOR Falcons Committee" in an effort to provide more information to the voting public regarding the proposed new 7-12 school currently being planned. Ross Tegeler of Meadow Grove was elected to preside over the committee, with Sheena (Stone) Tegeler serving as vice-president and Amber Wilcox serving as treasurer. Kirby Tegeler agreed to serve as the secretary of the group. Keith Leckron was invited to provide information to the group regarding the background leading up to the board’s decision to propose a renovation or new building, and to explain the current needs for the school. Also present were the architects that have offered several design options to the school board and public as the decision was being made on whether to renovate or rebuild. There was a discussion held to review some of the reasons the school board had decided to propose building a new 7-12 school on the current site. Some of them included the high cost of renovating the existing one hundred year old building, such as the need to replace the boiler heating system which alone estimated would cost a million dollars. Other factors included that the electrical systems in the structure not being adequate anymore to handle the increased computer systems and electronics needed to hold classes. Also the challenges of very uneven heating of the structure, with some rooms being cold while others were over heated in the winter. Another reason for the new building was given that the board had decided to add a new agriculture program for the students. This program, which would be beneficial in introducing the expanding world of agriculture and related technologies to students, would need additional space. The group decided to name the group the “Building FOR Falcons Committee,” because it best explains why the group is taking action. The reason, they said, is the understanding is that for our community to grow and to best educate our children for the future, no different than any good business, we must invest in good facilities to have the best outcome. Elkhorn Valley Schools is already seen as an outstanding academic school in the area, with nearly half of the graduating class holding 4.0 grade point averages. By Logan Lawson
[email protected] Tyler Rautenberg will show his versatility Saturday as the Elkhorn Valley All-Star transitions from quarterback to slot receiver. The recent graduate and four-year starter has spent the week preparing for Saturday's Northeast Nebraska All-Star Football Classic and learning the new position. Rautenberg said he's enjoyed the change and has learned a lot from his new teammates. "It's been good because another one of the guys that's at my position is from Norfolk and we are running their offense," he said. "Any question I have I just ask him and he knows the answer." Transition isn't new to the Falcons' quarterback and middle linebacker. Rautenberg helped lead the team from six-man football to eight-man football in 2014, throwing for more than 500 yards, nearly rushing for 500 yards and recording 75 tackles as well. His senior season, he was the team's second-leading rusher from his quarterback spot with more than 750 rushing yards. Now he is adding even more accolades to his name as a Northeast Nebraska All-Star Football player. It is easy to see the quickness on the field that Rautenberg used to put up his high numbers in his career. The coaches for the White Team noticed that quickness as well and decided to put that quickness to use in the game Saturday, transitioning him to slot receiver. He will use his speed and quickness to his advantage in match ups against the Red Team's linebackers and safeties in hopes of leaving his mark on the fourth annual game. Colleges have seen the quickness Rautenberg plays with as well, and many let him know that is where they are seeing him at the next level. However, he decided to go in a different direction for school. "I was considering playing college football and they told me that I was going to potentially be playing wide receiver," Rautenberg said. "But I actually decided to not play college football or anything. I'm just going to hang out and go to school." Even though he is not planning to play in college, the Elkhorn Valley standout is still going to give it his all this summer in his last chance to show his skills. He will also be participating in the Sertoma All-Star Game next weekend in Hastings. This week, however, is spent on adjusting for Rautenberg. Not only does he need to continue his transition to slot receiver, he also needs to adjust to the pace of 11-man football. Rautenberg admitted that the speed of the game is different, but he enjoys the extra space on the field that 11-man football provides. "It gives you more room to work," he said. Rautenberg will get his chance to work the field Saturday as his White Team takes on the Red Team in the Northeast Nebraska All-Star Football Game at Veteran's Memorial Park in Norfolk.
