Freshman nerves were nothing for Elkhorn Valley's Alison Stineman, who finished in the top 20 of the Class D division of the state cross country meeting.
Held in Kearney, Stineman ran the course in 21:24.1 to finish 20th. Rylee Rice of Ainsworth, also a freshman, won the individual championship with a time of 18:34.3. That's the fastest course time since the girls division moved to 5,000 meters in 2013. Aquinas Catholic won the team title while Ainsworth was second. Elkhorn Valley gathered in the gym Thursday afternoon to congratulate one team on a successful season.
The Falcons and their fans met at the Elkhorn Valley gymnasium Thursday for a pep rally celebrating the strong season of the cross country squads and to send two runners to the state meet in Kearney. Alison Stineman and Austin Miller will compete at the Kearney Country Club for the Class D State Cross Country Meet tomorrow, representing Elkhorn Valley. During the pep rally, the cross country team competed in two seperate relay races, heard from coaches and parents and enjoyed a slide show commemorating the season. Meadow Grove, population 301, is located 15 miles west of Norfolk on Highway 275 and represents just a 30 second drive by for many. But for those who call or called it home, Meadow Grove’s 130 year history is much more. “It’s my heritage,” Linda Lewis-Nelson said. “That’s how I feel about it.” Joy Griffith, Linda Lewis-Nelson and Rose Jeanine Lewis are descendant’s of PV Lewis, the founder of Meadow Grove. They organized an a town anniversary open house at the Community Building, something Lewis-Nelson has done every year since the town turned 125 back in 2011. The citizens who gathered brushed up on their history. “Our great-grandfather came here with the Mormons,” Griffith said.“He kind of tagged along with the Mormon wagon trains.” And of course they reminisced on memories. “Our grandfather was blind and we would lead him up town,” Lewis-Nelson said. “He could perfectly find his way uptown on his own, but I always thought it was cool to lead him up town.” They were eager to share the town’s claims to fame. Like how Meadow Grove hosted the first outdoor movies. “Yeah they had free outdoor movies down where this square is. A this point in time there was a bandstand and benches,” Griffith said. There was plenty of legendary town gossip. Like how musician and future TV-star Lawrence Welk fell in love with a Meadow Grove girl, but she chose a farm boy instead. There sure was a lot to be proud of over 130 years. “Well, you’re always welcome here and it’s a nice little town,” added Lewis-Nelson. “We’re proud of it.” By News Partner News Channel Nebraska The passenger was ejected from a vehicle that rolled three times near Tilden recently.
According to Antelope County Sheriff Bob Moore, Reginald Capps, 28 of Neligh, was driving a 2004 Chevy Impala when he lost control and rolled three times on Tuesday, Oct.11. The accident was reported at 10:23 p.m. Moore said the accident occurred west of 843rd road and 531st Ave. He said speed was a factor as Capp hit the edge of the ditch and then rolled three times. Passenger Jaymes R. Werner, 19, was ejected. Both men were transported to Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk. Both the Tilden and Meadow Grove Rescue responded to the scene. The Antelope County Sheriff's Department was assisted by the Neligh Police Department and Nebraska State Patrol. Elkhorn Valley was able to find some rhythm on offense Friday night against Stuart, scoring 26 points. However, the defense was unable to stop the Broncos, leading the Falcons to fall 64-26.
The Falcons allowed 24 points in the first quarter. They answered in the second quarter with two Shawn Klinetobe touchdowns to make it 24-14 before Stuart pulled away with three scores to secure the lead for good. The two teams traded scores in the third and fourth quarters to keep the scoring margin in tact. Josh McFarland had a very up-and-down game for the Falcons at quarterback. He only completed eight of his 23 attempts with two interceptions, but those eight completions were good for 140 yards and a touchdown. He also added 24 yards on the ground. Klinetobe accounted for two touchdowns on the ground for the Falcons. Dylan Wilkins also added a score and led Elkhorn Valley with 50 yards rushing on the night. Wilkins also proved to be McFarland's primary target on the night, hauling in three catches for 49 yards. Klinetobe had one touchdown through the air on one of his two catches. Brock Schaecher, Brandon Evans and Travis Fleetwood all had a catch as well on the night. Defensively, the Falcons gave up 457 totals yards to Stuart. McFarland led the effort, recording nine tackles and an interception. Prestin Vondra accounted for eight tackles of his own, two for a loss. The loss drops Elkhorn Valley to 0-7 on the season. They will wrap up the season next week as they look to earn their first win when they take on North Central. The Elkhorn Valley offense has struggled to find consistency in 2016, and that trend continued Friday night in a 53-0 loss to Osmond.
The Falcons could not find a way to move the ball consistently while the defense gave up 28 points in the first quarter to put them in a deep hole early. Josh McFarland gathered just 34 yards through the air from his quarterback spot, throwing one interception on his 21 attempts. On the ground, Dylan Wilkins led the way with 12 yards on his four carries. McFarland led the Falcon's defense as well, gathering 10 tackles and an interception on the night. Elkhorn Valley hopes to find their groove next Friday when they host Stuart. Elkhorn Valley as been nearly unstoppable in the second half of the 2016 season, winning seven of their last nine games, a trend they extended on Thursday.
The Falcons hosted Boyd County and came out on top, winning in straight sets 25-19, 25-20, 25-20. Statistics for the Falcons were not immediately available. Elkhorn Valley looks to continue their strong run on Tuesday when they travel to the Ewing Triangular. Come out early for the Elkhorn Valley home game and support students' trip to Spain.
Elkhorn Valley students traveling to Spain this summer are holding a fundraiser tailgate to raise funds. The tailgate will start at 6 p.m. and last through the Elkhorn Valley vs Osmond game. Head over to the Tiden football field by the concession stand to enjoy some good food. On the menu are sloppy joes, chips, bars, drinks, and all food is with a free will donation. Come and enjoy a meal with friends and watch a football game. Elkhorn Valley and Osmond hosted a Pink Out volleyball game Tuesday night in Osmond. The players donned pink jerseys during the game to support breast cancer awareness. Elkhorn Valley went on to win in four sets over the Tigers, 21-25, 35-33, 25-17, 25-20. The Falcons limited Osmond to just 26 kills despite playing four sets, with one set finishing with a score in the 30s. Elkhorn Valley moves on to 9-7 on the year. They now turn their sights to a Thursday night match up with Boyd County in Tilden. A week after a bittersweet loss to Bloomfield, the Falcons took the field looking to build on their best offensive output of the season.
Unfortunately, St. Mary's had other plans, downing Elkhorn Valley 63-0. The Falcons allowed eight Cardinal touchdowns, with seven of those coming from the St. Mary's rushing attack. Elkhorn Valley also allowed two safeties. Individual statistics will be added when they become available. |
