Strong seasons from three of Elkhorn Valley's leaders landed them on the D2-5 All-District Football Team.
Josh McFarland earned first team honors after a season that saw him lead the team in passing and rushing yards after moving from his running back spot to quarterback due to injury. He also led the Falcons in tackles and interceptions. Dylan Wilkins and Shawn Klinetobe made appearances on the list as honorable mention. Both players proved to be extremely versatile for Elkhorn Valley, with Wilkins taking snaps at defensive end, center, guard and running back. Klinetobe proved to be a threat rushing, receiving and on defense. ![]() Everyone is invited to the Tilden Public Library Lied Auditorium on Saturday November 19 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Family Fun Holiday Concert featuring The String Beans, one of Nebraska’s favorite entertainers for pre-school through elementary-aged audiences, not to mention parents, teachers and communities, should be a fun night for everyone. Each show is hilarious, inclusive and spontaneous, and each catchy tune is designed to get every audience dancing and singing along. This is a free event and open to the public. Funding for the concert is made possible with support of the Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment. Sponsored by the Tilden Library Foundation, along with support from the Friends of the Library. Some tears were shed amongst the sea of red white and blue that filled Elkhorn Valleys gym, and those tears were happy tears. Dawn Nelson is a daughter of a veteran and remembers when it changed from sad to happy emotions regarding veterans. “So there was a lot of feelings of sadness and inability to cope, I guess," Nelson remembered. "And thankfully as you saw my dad today, he’s volunteering in our local legion, he’s an active member of the community. And that transition has been amazing as a daughter to see.” Nelson and the Boots, Bits, and Buckles 4H Group wanted to make sure that the veterans knew just how appreciated they are for their service. “These guys so rarely get a thank you," Nelson expressed. "That being the daughter of a veteran, it meant so much for us to be able to give something back to them in this kind of way and this kind of magnitude that they can take something with them, and appreciate it, and look at it and remember today for the rest of their lives. So that’s really special.” Dozens of Quilts of Valor were presented to local veterans. Members as young as seven years old made, and then gave the quilts away. In the beginning, Nelson was surprised to see so many kids wanting to participate in this project. “These kids, when we were presented with this project, I really thought that there would just be a couple kids that were interested in it," Nelson explained. "But when they were so taken by it, I knew that it was just, it moved my heart. So I really wanted to make it as special of an event for them as possible.” When asked if the kids want to continue with these projects, it was a unanimous yes. “I think it is a really nice tradition for our group to start at the Veterans Day program here at Elkhorn valley," Nelson said. Nelson said that the spark of interest in this project will keep the quilts coming. She hopes that more members will join in on what she hopes will be a tradition. Jaimie Schmitz
[email protected] PDQ in Tilden will have a new look, and a new name to go along with the new owners. Matt Jansen and Dave Baumert owns JB Mart in Wayne and Travel Plaza in West Point, and have now bought the gas station and café previously called PDQ. John Baumert is a nephew to Matt Jansen and grandson to Dave Baumert, and is the manager of the new JB Mart. John Baumert says that the changes they are making are for the customers. “To keep people happy,” Baumert said. “That is our main goal.” They plan to keep the café as it is, but will make many other changes to the building. “We painted the outside, we installed a unisex bathroom on the inside and are closing up the two bathrooms on the outside,” Baumert explained. “We made quite a few changes that we think will make it work quite a bit better.” John Baumert was born in the area, but grew up traveling around with his military family. “I would only come up here otherwise to visit,” Baumert said. “I never really lived here.” Now, he plans to make this a permanent home, and plans to retire here someday. Some of the area's best music talents were on display Friday night as part of the 46th Annual Jr. High Choral Clinic hosted by Elkhorn Valley.
Junior high students from Battle Creek, Bloomfield, Boone Central, Clearwater-Orchard, Columbus Lakeview, Elkhorn Valley, Humphrey St. Francis, Neligh-Oakdale, Newman Grove, Norfolk Catholic, Norfolk Junior High, Pope John, Randolph, Schuyler, St. Michael's, Wayne Middle School and Wheeler Central all participated in the event. Angela Wright, a K-5 music specialist for Kearney Public Schools, acted as the director for the event. Ginger Bruzek joined as the accompanist. The night began with three songs by the mass choir. After that, some of the schools performed as small groups. Pope John's show choir performed "We're All In This Together" and Elkhorn Valley's show choir performed an 80's medley. After the small groups, the mass choir performed two final songs to wrap up the night. Northeast Community College student Eddy Berney, formerly of Tilden, prepares his Marine dress uniform for display as part of upcoming Veterans Day week activities at the College.
Berney is among members of Northeast’s Student Veterans Organization (SVO). The SVO is in charge of the Veterans Day activities, including a Veterans Day program on Friday, November 11, at 11 a.m. in the Cox Activities Center Theatre on the Northeast campus in Norfolk. The event is open to the public. A Marine formerly of Tilden will be among student veterans leading the Veterans Day program at Northeast Community College. NECC is commemorating the efforts and sacrifices of current and past members of the armed forces in November. This year’s program will also include a keynote address by Fred McLaughlin, a current Northeast military veteran student. A “Wall of Honor” video tribute featuring photos of current and previous military service members will also be included in the program. In addition, the SVO has created a military uniform display in the College Welcome Center through November 11. The display includes uniforms worn by current military students, awards and memorabilia they have earned, and photos and biographies of these students. “Our students have prepared this display using gear they have worn,” said Karen Hoefler, assistant registrar at Northeast. “They have done an amazing job dressing the mannequins and allowing us to display their hard earned awards.” The Student Veteran Organization also has another display, “The POW/MIA Table” - place settings to honor their fallen comrades. Tables are located in the atrium of the College Welcome Center and in the Hawk's Spot cafeteria in the Student Center. Hoefler said military supporters are encouraged to visit the Starbucks coffee kiosk in the College Welcome Center to pick up a free yellow lapel ribbon to show support of military servicemen and women. “A military combat boot will be located on the Starbucks counter to accept free-will donations to the Northeast Student Veteran Organization," Hoefler said. Also, as part of the College’s observance of Veterans Day, the Northeast men’s and women’s audition ensemble, Ebony and Crimson, will perform for members of the Norfolk Veterans Home at 9 a.m. The ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Linda Boullion, department chair and director of vocal music activities. Margaret Schultz is the accompanist. In the first round of subdistricts, Elkhorn Valley drew a rematch with a North Central squad that beat them decisively back in September.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, the second showdown was similar to the first. They were unable to keep up with a North Central squad that has been on a hot streak the last few weeks of the season. They fell in straight sets, 25-16, 25-17, 25-22. The loss ends Elkhorn Valley's season at 15-12, a slight drop from last year's 19-win season. In an all-Antelope County matchup, the Falcons rallied to defeat Neligh-Oakdale in the first round of the Niobrara Valley Conference tournament.
Elkhorn Valley then dropped a straight sets lost to host St. Mary's to end their conference hopes. Both Neligh-Oakdale and Elkhorn Valley are off the rest of the week as they prepare of district action. In the EV/N-O match, Elkhorn Valley won 14-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-19. Neligh-Oakdale sprinted out to a dominating first-set win and then look to have the second set handled with a 24-21 lead. But the Falcons rattled off five straight points to steal the momentum. The Falcons burst out to a 5-0 lead to start the third set and never let the Warriors get on a roll for the next sets. In the quarterfinal, St. Mary's defeated Elkhorn Valley 25-17, 25-22, 25-8. Elkhorn Valley played the Cardinals tight in the first two sets but St. Mary's maintained control and looked nothing but calm the entire match. Elkhorn Valley saw a tough season come to an end Friday night.
The Falcons finished an 0-8 season with a loss to North Central, falling 54-16. The Falcons gave up 48 points in the first half, all while only scoring eight themselves. They were unable to make up the deficit in the second half, allowing just six points but only scoring eight. Statistics for the Falcons will be added as they become available. Austin Miller entered the State Cross Country Meet in Kearney confident in his abilities and nothing that happened Friday should change that.
Miller, a senior at Elkhorn Valley, finished 51st out of 148 runners at the meet. His time of 18:37.4 was just under a minute behind the top 15 times. Norfolk Catholic's Jonah Heng finished first with a time of 16:55.1. |
