Just two days after the Christmas holiday, a Tilden family has lost everything as they fell victim to a house fire.
A little before 11 a.m. Tuesday morning, crews were called to the home of Gary and Dawn Nelson and their children. Crews from Tilden and Oakdale were both on scene. The house is considered a total loss and the cause is not yet known. Antelope County News will have more details on this story as they become available as well as more details on the needs of the family. After weather forced the Falcons to cancel plans to travel to Platteview last week, they made the switch to the rescheduled Elgin Public/Pope John Tournament instead. Once there, they were unstoppable.
Elkhorn Valley finished second as a team with 127.5 points. Three Falcons earned individual championships and two others also brought home medals. Dillon Stewart took home top honors at 113. After a bye to start the day, he didn’t have a match go longer than 1:50. He took down Kyle Kemper of Twin River, Zak Palmer of North Central and Payton Placke of Palmer, all by way of pin. At 120, Alejandro Martinez took first to keep his undefeated season intact. He alos received a bye to start the day before taking down Quinten Neumeister of Weeping Water and Garrett Neumeister of Weeping Water, both by pin. In the finals, Martinez beat Cross County/Osceola’s Cristian Carranza 5-0. Darren Stewart took first at 132 in just as dominating fashion as his teammates. He took down Brady Haughton of Fullerton and John Timbs of Weeping Water, both by pin, in 1:28 and 1:11, respectively. Stewart then took down Palmer’s Roy Guzman by technical fall, 17-2, to advance to the finals. In the championship match, he beat Neligh-Oakdale’s Andrew Herley by pin to head home with first place. Josh McFarland finished third on the day at 145 and Shawn Klinetobe was fourth at 182. Cassidy Frey, 8-year-old daughter of Terry and Rachel Frey, was at Children’s Hospital for surgery recently when two members of the Nebraska State Patrol stopped by for a visit. “Cassidy was having a hard time after surgery. The NSP made her smile and mixed up her day, so she just didn't lay in bed all day,” her mom said.” The NSP visits the children every year around this time and give stuffed animals to all the kids. We were so thankful for the troopers above and beyond support.” According to her mom, Cassidy was in the hospital for a left frontal craniotomy. She had been having severe headaches since the end of July, and doctors thought she was having migraines. “Dr. Brad Locke was amazing and dug deeper until he found what was the problem. He is an amazing doctor and Antelope Memorial Hospital is blessed to have him,” Frey said. “She had a big lump on her head which resulted in a CT that revealed the true problem. They removed that part of her skull and replaced it with titanium mesh plate.” Nine Elkhorn Valley students have been honored on the fall 2016 Acadmic All-State team by the Nebraska School Activities Association.
Brayden Effle and Tucker Hecht were named from the boys cross country team while Alison Stineman was honored on the girls cross country team. From football, Tyler Miller was named. Kimberly Frey was named from the girls golf team, Rachal Hahne and P.J. Miguelino were named from the play production and Amber Miller and Elizabeth Osborn were named from the volleyball team. Since 2006, this NSAA Award Program has recognized students who meet the criteria for nomination by their school in the season of their activity. Each year the NSAA and the Nebraska Chiropractic Physicians Association recognize students during fall, winter and spring Seasons who are nominated by their schools for their individual academic excellence, leadership and significant contributions in their NSAA activity. To be eligible for the honor, students must meet three requirements: 1. A nominated student must be a varsity player or organizational leader who has played a significant role on the team or in the organizational activity during the seasons for which nominations are accepted. 2. A nominated student must have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average, in all curricular subjects, of 93% or 3.7 on a 4.0-point scale or the equivalent. 3. NSAA high schools or their cooperative sponsorship may nominate a maximum of two students per NSAA activity program. Any student, freshman through senior, is eligible for the honor. The Peace United Church of Christ hosted the annual Christmas Cantata to help raise money for Monica Hansen on December 11.
The cantata played to a full church and raised over $3700. Donations can still be accepted at any time. Donations can be mailed to Peace Church UCC, Box 28 in Tilden. All funds raised are given to Monica, as the food for the meal after the cantata was all donated. Despite strong defense from the girls and a double-double for one of the boys, the Elkhorn Valley basketball teams both took losses when they hosted Chambers/Wheeler Central.
In the girls game, Elkhorn Valley held the Renegades to just 28 percent shooting from the floor and allowed just one player to score more than seven points. Unfortunately, they were only able to find the bottom of the basket on 18 percent of their shots as they fell 38-29. Alyssa Rood was the only Falcon to shoot for better than 50 percent from the floor, tying for the team high in points with eight on four of seven shooting. Hannah Ollendick added eight points as well on two of 17 shooting. Rood also led the Falcons in rebounds with nine while Ollendick pulled in eight. Liz Osborn and Sierra Rystrom each accounted for six rebounds on the night. In the boys game, the Falcons gave up 25 turnovers to the Renegades and were unable to keep up in the 60-40 loss. Junior Brayden Effle led the Falcons with an impressive performance, posting a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Austin Miller and Tucker Hecht each dropped in eight points for Elkhorn Valley. The girls took a 20-8 lead at the end of the first quarter on their way to a big 80-44 win over Santee. They connected on 49 percent of their shots, pulled in 49 rebounds and accounted for 22 steals on the night. Three Falcons reached double figures in scoring. Amber Miller, Alyssa Rood and Sierra Rystrom scored 19, 16 and 10, respectively, on a combined 20 of 37 shooting from the floor. Elkhorn Valley cleaned up the glass well also, led by Brianna Werner's nine rebounds. Hannah Ollendick pulled in seven boards while Rood accounted for six. In the boys game, a 17-7 lead after the first was enough for them to get their first win of the year, beating Santee 69-63. The boys knocked down 48 percent of their shots on the night for their best output of the young season. Austin Miller (18), Kalen Dittrich (16) and Tucker Hecht (13) all reached double figures in scoring on the night. Dalton Smutny just missed hitting double figures with nine points. Dittrich and Brayden Effle each pulled in eight rebounds on the night as well. Members of the Boots, Bits and Buckles 4H Club worked hard to create a memorable experience for the Veterans and audience in attendance at the Veteran’s Day Program held at Elkhorn Valley Schools this year.
After presenting the Local Veterans with their Quilts of Valor, the group offered up a challenge for the Elkhorn Valley Students so that they may also help local Veterans from Nebraska this Holiday Season. The EV CAREs Package Classroom Challenge was a competition which allowed Elkhorn Valley classrooms to donate snacks to be sent to Nebraska National Guard soldiers deployed to Afghanistan. The grand prize for the winning classes was a pizza party sponsored by the 4H Club. The project was a huge success. Initially, the group expected to receive a few boxes of snacks to send overseas, however when 4H Leader, Dawn Nelson, arrived to receive the donated items, she found an entire pickup load of items to load up. After doing an inventory of all the snacks, it was determined that there were enough items to provide each of the 35 deployed soldiers in the group with a large care package full of goodies. The Boots, Bits and Buckles 4H'ers met on Saturday, December 3 to assemble the items in boxes to be shipped to Afghanistan. Each individual care package contained two cans of Chef Boyardee, two boxes of pop tarts, a large package of beef sticks, Mountain Man snacks, two macaroni and cheese packages, a can of chicken, two packages of sunflower seeds and a six pack of Hershey chocolate bars, a box of graham crackers and Marshmallows. Also included were letters, pictures and thank you’s from Elkhorn Valley students and Boots, Bits and Buckles Club members. In addition to the individual care packages, the group also ended up with seven huge bulk boxes with more mac and cheese, Chef Boyardee, snacks, candy, Keurig k cups and big packages of soup for the group to distribute amongst themselves. After the items were packaged up, American Legion Commander Don Carter transported the packages to the Nebraska National Guard in Lincoln on Monday, December 5. The items are currently in route to Afghanistan and will arrive to the service men and women just in time for the holidays. This was a wonderful project that the students of Elkhorn Valley should be very proud of participating in. Elkhorn Valley had an up-and-down night Tuesday night when they hosted Madison in Tilden.
The girls came out on the good end of the night, finishing with a 55-30 win, thanks in part to a big first quarter. The Falcons came out of the gates fast, jumping out to a 24-14 lead at the end of the first. The shooting tailed off a bit throughout the remainder of the game, but strong defense kept Elkhorn Valley well in the driver's seat. Sophomores Hannah Ollendick and Amber Miller each reached double figures for the Falcons. Ollendick scored 15 points on 42 percent shooting and Miller reached 13 points thanks to a great night at the free throw stripe, going six for six from the line. Alyssa Rood pulled down eight rebounds while Ollendick accounted for seven. In the second half of the night, the boys struggled to find the bottom of the net, shooting just 29 percent in a 68-35 loss. Turnovers didn't help the poor shooting night, as Elkhorn Valley gave the ball away to the Dragons 26 times. Austin Miller was able to pull out a strong night for the Falcons, accounting for 14 points and three rebounds. Brayden Effle added seven points and nine rebounds on the night. Julio Sierra added four points and seven rebounds. Both teams are back in action Friday night when they host Santee.
