Elkhorn Valley entered the Cyclone Holiday Tournament expecting the very best out of every team they faced, and that is exactly what they got.
"Coming after five days of break and coming into a tournament like this, it could have gone either way," said Falcon head coach Brendan Dittmer. Fortunately for him and his Elkhorn Valley girls, it went their way both nights, including a 41-28 victory over a scrappy Ewing team in the championship game. The Falcons shot just 24 percent from the floor on the night but made 14 free throws - many of them late in the game - to put away the Tigers. The Falcons were led by their super sophomore duo of Amber Miller and Hannah Ollendick. Miller finished with a team-high 15 points while pulling in five rebounds. Ollendick dropped in 12 points and added three steals on the night. Fellow sophomore Sierra Rystrom had a strong night under the glass, bringing down eight rebounds for Elkhorn Valley. Earlier in the night, the boys were unable to duplicate the success when they fell to Clearwater-Orchard in the consolation game of the boys bracket. Both teams shot well from the floor, with the Cyclones hitting 45 percent of their shots and the Falcons hitting on 40 percent of theirs, but it was Clearwater-Orchard who was able to pull away late thanks to a 21-point fourth quarter for a 65-54 victory. Austin Miller hit 57 percent of his shots for a game-high 20 points while Kalen Dittrich was able to finish with 17 points on 64 percent shooting. Dittrich also proved to be a force in the middle, leading the Falcons with seven rebounds and taking away four steals. Last year, Elkhorn Valley exploded to one of the best wrestling seasons in school history, placing third at the state wrestling meet. Five Falcons returned home with medals. Two of those were sophomore twin brothers Darren and Dillon Stewart, sons of Todd and Julie Stewart.
The Stewarts finished the year with a combined 77-13 record. Dillon took third place in the 106 pound class while Darren took fourth at 120. Now juniors, the Stewart brothers seem to just keep getting better. Through the first few meets of the season, the two have combined for 18 wins with just a single loss. That one loss came when Darren fell to Plainview’s Trenton Steinkraus, another returning state qualifier at 132 pounds. The two brothers began wrestling together at a young age, simply as a way to burn off some energy. “We were agressive when we were younger so our mom and dad to us to just wear off energy in the wrestling room,” explained Dillon. “We had been wrestling since preschool.” “We were never really interested in it until fourth grade,” added Darren. Darren is the slightly bigger wrestler of the two, a small point of pride with him. He moved up a class from last year, now wrestling at 132 pounds while Dillon now takes the mat at 113 pounds. Dillon has had just one match all year last longer than 1:50, an 18-2 technical fall victory over Ben Wood of Central Valley. Darren has been equally impressive, taking all of his wins by way of pin with the exception of a 17-2 technical fall victory over Palmer’s Roy Guzman. Despite their father not having been a wrestler in high school, wrestling has become a big part of life for the Stewart family. In fact, wrestling spills over into the home, in a safe way. “We wrestle at home all the time,” said Darren. “We have a wrestling mat down in the basement now.” The two haven’t wrestled each other competitively since they were younger, but they work every day as wrestling partners. They continually help one another improve and always make a point to be there for each other during a big match. Both Dillon and Darren have an obvious goal. “We both just want to be state champs,” Dillon said. “That’s what we’ve been working for.” While the twins obviously have a strong bond, they also feel close to the rest of the team, a key compenent for another strong state run. The wrestling season is still young, but the ever-improving brothers are on the right track to reach their goal of winning that state championship. If all goes well, they may just lead the entire Elkhorn Valley team to their first as well. ![]() The Falcons will play for holiday tournament championship on Thursday after holding their opponent to just seven second-half points. Elkhorn Valley dominated Chambers/Wheeler Central in the first round on Wednesday afternoon, winning 37-20. The Falcons held an 18-13 advantage at the half. The Falcons were led on the night by Hannah Ollendick's 12 points, including hitting two of her four shots from beyond the arc. Alyssa Rood dropped in 10 as well for Elkhorn Valley. Both girls were also crucial under the rim, pulling in nine and six rebounds, respectively. The Falcons will play the winner of the Clearwater-Orchard/Ewing game at 6 p.m. on Thursday in Clearwater. The Elkhorn Valley boys dropped a 66-44 first-round game to CWC. They move onto 4:30 p.m. consolation against the loser of the Clearwater-Orchard/Ewing game. Despite shooting 43 percent from the floor, the Falcons were unable to keep up with the high-powered offense of the Renegades. Austin Miller led the way with 17 points, including three three-pointers, while Kalen Dittrich added 11. From partner News Channel Nebraska
As plans go from Christmas to New Year’s Eve parties, one local police officer is planning an event designed to keep people safe this year. Officer Terry James of Tilden is planning an annual New Year’s Eve celebration at the Tilden Library this Saturday. The event will feature most of the trappings normally associated with end of the year bashes…music, food and fellowship. But the one New Year’s tradition the night won’t have is alcohol. “I’m in law enforcement, and I guess I’ve covered too many accidents involving alcohol,” James said. “In this one there is no alcohol so anyone that wants to drink alcohol won’t get any there.” James has been organizing the event for 15 years. He says Saturday’s event will run from 7:30 p.m. to just after midnight. A Tilden family who lost everything just days after Christmas is needing items to repace what they lost.
