Elkhorn Valley has been getting ready for homecoming day with dress up days this week, and today was Western Day.
Students came to school with cowboy bandanas, cowboy hats, and even saddles. Check out some of snapshots below and look back for more homecoming photos! After seemingly finding their groove over the past three games, the Elkhorn Valley Falcons stumbled at the Howells-Dodge Tournament over the weekend, going 0-3.
They took on Howells-Dodge, Shelby-Rising City and Elgin Public/Pope John, winning just one set in their three matches. In their match with Howells-Dodge, the Falcons fell 12-25 and 13-25. Amber Miller led the way for Elkhorn Valley, recording three kills and five digs. The match with Shelby-Rising City did not look much better for the Falcons as they fell 22-25 and 11-25. Sierra Rystrom stepped up offensively for the Falcons, recording eight kills on her 18 attempts. On the defensive end, Hannah Ollendick and Liz Osborn were credited with seven digs each. The match with Elgin Public/Pope John turned out to be the best of the weekend for Elkhorn Valley as they won the first set 25-23 before falling in the final two sets 9-25 and 21-25. Ollendick turned in a great all-around performance for Elkhorn Valley, recording five kills, four aces, four blocks and 11 digs. Alyssa Rood and Bri Werner also had good performances defensively, recording 12 digs each. The Falcons look to return to the win column September 15 when they take on North Central in Tilden. It was a big night for many Falcon volleyball girls as Elkhorn Valley took down Niobrara/Verdigre in straight sets, 25-17, 25-11 and 25-19.
Offensively, sophomore Sierra Rystrom led the attack with nine kills at a 40.9 percent clip. Alyssa Rood added six kills, hitting on 50 percent of her attempts. Rood was also responsible for four aces for the Falcons, while Amber Miller added five aces of her own. On the defensive end, Hannah Ollendick brought up 13 digs. Rood and Miller added nine digs apiece and Liz Osborn accounted for seven digs. The win improves Elkhorn Valley's record to 3-1 on the year. They will now turn their attention to the Howells-Dodge Tournament this Saturday. In an all-Antelope County battle on Tuesday night, Elkhorn Valley handed Neligh-Oakdale its first loss of the season.
Elkhorn Valley, now 2-1, defeated Neligh-Oakdale (2-1) in three sets 25-20, 25-16, 25-23 in Tilden. In a match that was closer than the score indicates, Elkhorn Valley earned the win just as Neligh-Oakdale was starting to find a rhythm. The Falcons returned their starting core while Neligh-Oakdale has a mix of players with starting experience but not a lot of game time playing together. The third and final set of the night was the most competitive. Fighting to force a fourth set, Neligh-Oakdale held a 20-15 advantage over the Falcons. Sophomore Hannah Ollendick hit a hard kill off of a double-block attempt by Warrior seniors Taylor Sehi and Nikki Grosserode to pull within four points. Falcon sophomore Amber Miller then tied the set at 20-all when she caught the Warriors off guard with a tip across the net, falling perfectly at the feet of three diving Warriors. But Neligh-Oakdale responded and forced an error to retake the lead, 21-20. The lead bounced back and forth due to errors until the Falcons went ahead 24-23 when senior Shelby Cakebread hit a line drive on the left side of the court that landed just inside the line. The match ended on a Warrior hitting error, 25-23. The Falcons' synergy was evident right off the bat as they powered out to a quick 11-5 lead in the first set. Grosserode stopped the momentum with a well-time ace serve to fire up Neligh-Oakdale and start a run to knot the score at 13-all. Three straight errors by the Warriors on both hitting and serve receive proved fatal as Elkhorn Valley regained the momentum and didn't allow Neligh-Oakdale any closer and claimed the 25-20 win in the first. The Warriors burst out to an early lead in the second set. Tied at 4, Kinsley Klabenes put down a kill to start the 5-0 run leading to a 9-4 Neligh-Oakdale advantage. Senior Falcon setter Liz Osborn connected with classmate Alyssa Rood for the kill to stop the run and halt the momentum. Elkhorn Valley eventually stole both the lead and momentum for the 25-16 second-set win. Neligh-Oakdale senior Chase Vleck led the team in attacks with seven kills. Grosserode added four more while Sehi finished with three blocks. Neligh-Oakdale won both the junior varsity and "C" team matches earlier in the night. The Elkhorn Valley Falcons can't seem to get their offense going.
A week after coming out flat against Winside, the Falcons were shut out by St. Francis, falling 76-0. St. Francis scored 66 of their 76 points before halftime, putting Elkhorn Valley into a deep hole early. The Falcons were never able to rebound, despite only allowing 10 points in the second half. Stepping in at quarterback, Josh McFarland completed a respectable 10 of his 18 throws. However, he threw for just 34 yards and had three interceptions. Chay Faulkner was the primary target for McFarland, hauling in four catches for 16 yards. Darren Stewart had two catches for five yards while Brock Schaecher and Dillon Stewart each had a catch for nine and seven yards, respectively. On the ground, McFarland was the only Falcon to have positive rushing yards, running for one yard on ten attempts. Defensively, Eziquel Pena led the way with 12 total stops for Elkhorn Valley. Faulkner was not far behind, adding nine total tackles of his own. One bright spot for the Falcons was on special teams, where Faulkner had an outstanding night punting. On his six punts, he averaged 43.5 yards per punt. He recorded a 54 yard punt for his longest of the night. The Falcons will look to adjust and improve during their bye week this week before they take on Allen September 16. The Elkhorn Valley Falcons were finally able to step on the court for competitive action for the first time in 2016 Thursday. They traveled to Winside for the Winside Triangular.
They took on both the host school and Wausa in their first matches of the season. Against Winside, the Falcons were unable to win a close one, losing 20-25 and 23-25. Their match with Wausa went much differently, however, as they dominated the Vikings in straight sets, 25-14 and 25-8. The Falcons can be seen back in action September 6 as they take on the Neligh-Oakdale Warriors.
