Now, the infrastructure is growing fast with the scheduled project to be done by early spring of next year.
The project involves a 17.225 million dollar renovation and new build for the building. With bigger plans for the future, the school will not be redoing everything at once, but the board does have plans to continue the project later. Many updates on the new structure seem to be going quite fast. Almost all the walls are up on the new buildings and a steel frame for the classroom quad with a stairwell is put in place. A new roof was also added. “It’s moving really quickly,” said Superintendent Keith Leckron. “It’s pretty amazing to see how fast this building is being put together.” The new school is being built south of the current elementary wing. After the project is complete, the 1913 and 1922 wings will be demolished. Then, in the future a four classroom preschool wing will be added north of the building and a playground built on the north side. All building will connect to the 1987 building. “I see it everyday, but if somebody saw this project every week, they’d really notice progress,” said Leckron. The Nebraska Walleye Association Kids Fishing Clinics Charity is helping kick of Tilden Prairie Days with a kid's fishing event in Tilden.
The event will take place at the Tilden City Pond July 28 with check in at 5:00. A meal will be served at 5:15, and the workshop will start at 6:00. After the workshop concludes, kids will be able to fish in the pond. The workshop will be put on by instructors from the NWA Kids Fishing Clinics Charity and the Nebraska Game and Parks. Kids will learn everything they need to know about fishing, including casting, knot tying, bait, tackle, water safety, fish identification, and anatomy. All participants will receive a certificate, fishing rod and reel and other free items. There is a limit of 75 kids for the workshop. To register, email [email protected] with the name of the child, their date of birth, name of parent, address, email address and phone number by July 26th. Participants also have to bring a completed waiver form with them to the event. The form can be found at www.nebraskawalleye.com under "Fishing is Fun!" Mom's and Dad's are encouraged to attend! Elkhorn Valley Athletics received a generous donation from Tilden Family Medicine thanks to the 2017 Sports Physicals.
Dr. Douglas Dilly, Sarah Anderson, APRN and Anita Murphy, PA-C of Faith Regional Physician Services Tilden Family Medicine presented Athletic Director Tracy Larson of Elkhorn Valley School a donation of $675. The donation comes from the proceeds from the 2017 Sports Physicals program. Tilden firefighters and EMTs braved the heat during an extrication training for the new EMT trainees on Saturday.
Rich Lutz and Andrew Evans, both of Pierce, took charge of local trainees Michelle McIntosh, Kylie Thiemann, Jamie Fleetwood and Josh Bailey as part of EMT class curriculum. Other EMTs and firemen were part of the training as well. Stephanie Thompson, EMT trainee supervisor, said that the main reason for the class was because it is required for the trainees, but a great refresher for everyone, too. “It kind of gave them a first hand perspective of what it’s like to be the victim in that scenario,” said Thompson. “They got to feel when the glass breaks and the medal cracking and breaking, what it would be like for somebody to be in that position.” Extrication training included learning how to get victims out of vehicles safely and efficiently. Those playing the victims were students going through the EMT class. All four students dressed in full gear and used the opportunity as a learning experience. They also contributed to the extrication process. Each student learned how to open cars with the jaws of life and the instructors provided questioning of what to do while giving directional training. Mike Krick, assistant fire chief, said that the most important thing to take away from the training is a great learning experience. With a controlled environment, everyone is allowed to stop and ask questions at any point. This provides a one on one training experience. “We control every aspect so that each person can take their time to figure things out,” said Krick. The training included a step by step process, Krick said. We had to figure out the best way to complete the task because each vehicle is a little different. The more training you receive with different models of cars, the better you are prepared he said. “Some of them had never seen any of this before so it’s always good to know what’s going on,” said Krick. “It’s a lot of teamwork and a lot of communication.” Two vehicles were used in the training exercise donated by Michelle McIntosh and her family. The drill took place on the edge of Tilden near Chris Hansen’s shop. The trainees will finish their classes at the end of June and then complete the national registry test. The training process includes 155 hours of total class time. Tilden citizens were busy with Memorial Day services all morning on Monday.
The day started with a breakfast for all persons that took part in the ceremonies, as well as past members of the legion and their spouses. Then at 9:30 a.m., the first ceremony was held at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. At 10 a.m., the Tilden City Cemetery held a ceremony. Finally at 10:30 a.m., there was a final ceremony in Meadow Grove Park. PJ Miguelino shot for the moon and received the stars when he became the first ever in Elkhorn Valley school history to graduate as a Junior.
Miguelino graduated May 13th with the 2017 class honored with a plaque for graduating a year early and maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Miguelino plans to attend the University of Nebraska Lincoln for two years and then transfer to Purdue University to double major in aerospace and mechanical engineering. He received a regents scholarship to UNL that covers full tuition for up to 135 credit hours. “It’s been a long road, but you know I’ve been working hard and it’s finally paying off,” he said. Miguelino, the son of Mary and Patrick, said his journey to graduate early wasn’t always an easy road. With not a lot of free time and many extra classes, he didn’t have time for extracurricular activities, although he still finished fifth in state speech in March. Now graduating early leaves the 17-year-old missing out on his senior year of high school. “That’s the big year, but I think I’m investing more in my future.” Miguelino said. “While I do have to miss my senior prom and senior homecoming and all of the senior days, I guess I’m paying that off with having a more successful future.” Miguelino said he hopes to work with NASA and be one of the first on the mission to Mars in 2030. He said graduating early will allow him to move on to a master’s degree a year earlier than others and “gain an edge.” One thing Miguelino is looking forward to the most is independence. “I’m finally going to have that responsibility to take care of myself and to take care of other things. A full fledged adult,” Miguelino said. Elkhorn Valley graduated 22 seniors on Saturday afternoon.
With the motto, "Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we catch excellence," the Elkhorn Valley seniors proudly walked the stage for the last time. Tucker Hecht earned valedictorian honors while Tyler Miller was salutatorian. Also graduating with 4.0s were Shelby Cakebread, Gracie Halsey and Patrick J. Miguelino. The Class of 2017 were Hailey Berglund, Shelby Cakebread, Jacob Dusel, Haley Eckert, Travis Fleetwood, Gracie Halsey, Tucker Hecht, Alexia King, Harmony Klinetobe, Alejandro Martinez, Patrick Miguelino, Austin Miller, Tyler Miller, Elizabeth Osborn, Ezequiel Pena, Alyssa Rood, Jaydn Schaecher, Avenley Short, Koby Smith, Billie Werner, Dylan Wilkins and Courtney Williams. Central Community College-Hastings honored 471 graduate candidates May 6 during its 50th annual commencement ceremonies on Saturday, including a student who graduate from Elkhorn Valley.
Recipients of degrees and diplomas included Nicolas J. Maughan, of Meadow Grove, with a degree in diesel technology. |
