The Elkhorn Valley junior high basketball team won its own tournament on Friday.
Players were Reed Bennett, Jasxon Eischeid, Derek Hahne, Conner Klein, Conner Larson, Carter Rautenberg, Colten Rystrom, Dylan Wright, Hunter Bennett, Jacon Cleveland, Trevin Hanson, Adam Miller, Braedyn Ollendick and Caden Reikofski. Neligh-Oakdale finished runner-up while Elgin Public/Pope John was third. Winside finished fourth. There wasn't a more intense and exciting game in the opening round of the Niobrara Valley Conference Tournament than the showdown between Elkhorn Valley and Ewing.
The Falcons entered the fourth quarter trailing the Tigers 39-31 but powered back with a 21 point quarter to force overtime. In the extra frame of play, neither team was able to take control, with both squads dropping in 12 points to send the game to a second overtime. Finally, in the sixth quarter of play, the Falcons were able to grab hold of the game and take home a 72-66 victory. Elkhorn Valley got the win on the shoulders of their super sophomores, Amber Miller and Hannah Ollendick, who scored 20 and 23 points, respectively, on a combined 12-of-28 shooting from the floor. The duo hit five shots from downtown and each hit seven free throws on the night. Brianna Werner was the only other Falcon in double figures with 10 points. Scoring was not the only impact Miller and Ollendick had on the game. Miller pulled in six rebounds, dished out three assists and came away with a steal. Ollendick pulled in eight more rebounds, dished out four more assists and came away with six steals of her own. Alyssa Rood helped the team down low as well, pulling in eight boards and coming away with three steals. Unfortunately, the boys weren't quite as fortunate as they took on the host school, St. Mary's. After keeping the game close after the first quarter of play, they were unable to keep their momentum going as they fell to the Cardinals 52-28. Kalen Dittrich and Brayden Effle led the Falcons with six points each while Tucker Hecht added five. As a team, the Falcons shot just 29 percent. The Cyclones boys and girls each played tight games to kick off the Niobrara Valley Conference tournament. Unfortunately, they saw two different results.
The boys took on Niobrara/Verdigre in their first-round match up. The Cyclones trailed at the Cougars 38-24 at the half, but made a strong comeback attempt in the second half, scoring 27 points in the final quarter. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as they fell 68-60. Three Cyclones reached double figures, led by a double-double by Travis Kerkman. He went 9-of-17 for 21 points and added 11 rebounds. Blake Hoke added 12 points in his return to action while Ryan Wilhelm dropped in 10 points and pulled down six boards. The girls came out on the other end of the spectrum, beating Stuart in comeback fashion. They rode a 17-9 fourth quarter to take down the Broncos 47-42. Three Lady Cyclones also hit double digits in the scoring column. Seniors Kinzly Macke and Kylie Thiele each scored 12 points for O-C while Katie Stearns added 11. Macke also added a double-double, pulling in 11 rebounds. Allee Snider also pulled in six rebounds for the Cyclones. Facing wrestlers of all classes, Neligh-Oakdale showed its grit and finished with three wrestlers in the top five and five in the top eight on Saturday at the Boone Central Invite.

This time it was over the Bulldogs of Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family. For the second-straight game, and just the second time all year, the Wolfpack trailed at halftime, this time 25-21. A slow third quarter didn't seem to help matters, as EPPJ entered the final quarter down 39-25. However, the Wolfpack exploded in the final frame, scoring 31 points while holding the Bulldogs to just 10 to pull out a 56-49 victory. That fourth quarter was aided by the Wolfpack's ability to get to the free throw stripe. EPPJ shot 30 of their 41 total free throws in the final quarter, hitting 22. Baylee Wemhoff, Allyson Wemhoff and Liz Selting were all especially effective at the line, hitting a combined 22-of-32 of their free attempts. Allyson finished with a team-high 17 points, followed by Selting's 13 points. Lydia Behnk added 10 and Baylee finished with 8. The Wolfpack defense was stout all night as well. Behnk finished with an impressive nine blocks and the team came away with 16 steals. In the second half of action, the boys were unable to duplicate the comeback of the girls. EPPJ finished the first quarter with a 13-10 lead before finding trouble scoring for the rest of the night, falling to the Bulldogs 71-36. Kyle Schumacher and Chad Bode both finished in double figures on the night, scoring 11 points each to lead the Wolfpack. Hunter Reestman added six in support. As a team, EPPJ hit just 31 percent of their shots. However, one bright spot in the scoring was their ability to hit the deep shots, going 6-of-14 from beyond the arc. The weather is still affecting sports across Antelope County.
Thursday night's game between Clearwater-Orchard and Wausa has been postponed. Wausa did not have school on Thursday, leading to the cancellation. An announcement on the reschedule date will be made at a later time. Ten O-C powerlifters traveled to Lincoln this past Saturday for the Capital City Clash Powerlifting meet held at Parkview Christian High School.
It was an open meet which provided a line-up of stiff competition with nearly 100 lifters — both student and adult lifters. “We can be very proud of the way our students competed and conducted themselves in representing our school and communities,” said coach Jeff Shabram. Many personal bests were set and four state records. The Cyclones won nine gold medals and one silver medal. The newest state records set for USAPL Powerlifting was done by Wyatt Shabram (35 kg weight class youth – squat, bench, deadlift & total). After all the dust settled, the Cyclones walked away with some hard-earned team hardware. The high school team earned 2nd place. And in the combined division (all ages), the Cyclones won first. The top 4 scoring teams were Clearwater-Orchard, Columbus, Midland College and UNL Co-eds. Individual medal winners for the Cyclones were Wyatt Shabram, 1st place (35 kg class - youth); Uriel Salas, 1st place (53 kg class); Cade Mlnarik, 1st place, (59 kg class); Gunnar Shabram, 1st place (66 kg class - youth); Tyler Wright. 1st place (74 kg class); Houston Marino, 2nd place, (74 kg class); Justin Allemang, 1st place (74 kg class equipped); Ira Lampert 1st place, (83 kg class); Zane Herley, 1st place (120+ kg class), and Jaiden Switzer, 1st place (72 kg class). The next powerlifting meet for the O-C lifters will be the Class D State Powerlifting Meet held Saturday, March 25, in Clearwater. “We are excited to host this year’s state meet in Clearwater,” Shabram said. “The Orchard AAU Powerlifting Meet is set for April 8. Go Cyclones!” Ten O-C powerlifters traveled to Lincoln this past Saturday for the Capital City Clash Powerlifting meet held at Parkview Christian High School.

The girls game started out with the teams trading buckets, but OC was able to make a run near the end of the first quarter for a 7-point advantage. The Lady Cyclones extended their lead in the second and third quarters to pick up the 47-29 victory. Kinsley Klabenes of Neligh-Oakdale led all scorers with 15 points. Other Lady Warriors filling the scoring column were Bailey Frey with 7, Rachel Higgins 4, Heather Pellatz 2 and Alexis Jensen 1. Pellatz also swiped 4 steals on the night. Kinsley Macke and Allison Kerkman topped the OC scorers with 12 points each, followed by Brooklynn Chipps with 9, Kylie Thiele 7, Katie Stearns 4 and Vanessa Carpenter 3. Chipps also grabbed 9 boards to lead in rebounding. The boys contest started out nearly the same as the girls with both teams trading scores, but, this time, it was the Warriors who took a 9-point lead at the end of the first. Neligh-Oakdale doubled OC's scoring in the second, and continued to widen the margin until they eventually came away with the 72-45 win. N-O's Tyson Belitz led all scorers with 24 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Rounding out the scoring for the Warriors were Grant White 22, Alex Kerkman 12, Chris Bentley 6, Nate Buck 3, Damon Arehart and Austin Rice 2 each and Cole Belitz 1. Bentley led both teams by nabbing 7 steals. Point leaders for the Cyclones were Jacob Long with 11 and Ryan Willhelm with 10. Other scorers were Chris Kester with 8, Grady Bellingtier and Liam Odell 5 each, Travis Kerkman 4 and Gage Clifton 2. Kerkman also cleared the boards for 9 rebounds. The Wolfpack trailed at halftime for the first time all year, entering the break with the Braves winning 18-14. They finally regained the lead on a Jordan Mescher three with four minutes remaining in the third. They then battled back and forth with Battle Creek for much of the remainder of the game before some key Baylee Wemhoff free throws put the game out of reach, giving EPPJ a 50-41 win. Wemhoff posted a game-high 17 points in the win. Liz Selting added nine and Mescher dropped in eight. Lydia Behnk was strong under the net, hauling in 10 rebounds to lead the Wolfpack. Later in the boys game, the boys found themselves in a similar situation, trailing at half despite another Ashton Evans buzzer beater. However, their deficit proved to be much larger as they trailed 35-18. They hoped to use the momentum gained from Evans's last second shot to end the half, but came out flat in the third quarter, scoring just nine points. The added 16 in the final quarter on their way to a 64-43 loss. Individual stats will be added as they become available. With the winter sports season drawing near a close, the Niobrara Valley Conference tournament is just around the corner and now area teams know their drawing in the tournament.

The girls started the day on Saturday with a tough loss, struggling to keep up with a hot-shooting Spartan squad. Boyd County outshot the Falcons 46 percent to 34 percent, handing the Falcons a 46-39 loss. Hannah Ollendick and Alyssa Rood led the way for Elkhorn Valley, dropping in 10 points each. The duo led the way under the boards for the Falcons as well, pulling in seven and six rebounds, respectively. Ollendick also dished out six assists. Unfortunately for the Falcons, the boys didn't fare much better in the late game of the day. They were unable to overcome a 29-17 halftime deficit, falling to the Spartans 66-44. Kalen Dittrich scored a team-high nine points on the day. Brayden Effle and Dalton Smutny added eight each while Koby Smith and Austin Miller each accounted for seven. Effle was once again strong in all phases of the game, despite the loss, pulling in 11 rebounds and dishing out five assists. About 300 youth wrestlers from all across Northeast Nebraska spent the day at the Neligh-Oakdale Youth Invite on Sunday.
Among the key organizers were Trent Hoefer, Eric Henn and Scott Kester, who lead the Warrior youth program. It's been little more than a year since the Neligh-Oakdale wrestling community lost one of its biggest supporters. On Saturday, Steve Jessen's legacy was remembered by honoring not one, but two, great wrestling performances.
The second annual Steve Jessen Memorial Most Valuable Wrestler Award was presented to two wrestlers following the Neligh-Oakdale Invite. Coaches were asked to vote for their top choice and two wrestlers tied. Receiving the award were Jake Judge of West Holt and Tyler Pawloski of Pleasanton. Drew Loberg of Randolph, who is currently out with an injury, won the award last year. "They both won very, very tough weight brackets today," said Warrior coach Gary Davis. "Each weight bracket at four rated kids in the state, so it was like a mini state meet. They both deserved it, so I'm glad they both got it. They wrestled really." Pawloski, a 126-pound sophomore, pinned Creighton's Zac Hazen in 2:46 in the championship round. Judge, a 145-pound senior, won a 5-1 decision against Bryce Zimmerer of Creighton. Jessen, who died in December 2015, was a guidance counselor at Neligh-Oakdale from 1992-2010, after spending nearly 20 years at Osmond. He was a part of the Warrior wrestling coaching staff from 1995-2006. All 21 coaches at the meet voted on the award. The Elkhorn Valley grapplers made the trip to Neligh on Saturday and came home with plenty of hardware.
The Falcons were led yet again by Dillon Stewart at 113 pounds. Stewart remained undefeated on the year on his way to a first place finish. He won all three of his matches by pin, with his biggest challenge being a finals match up with Amherst's Salvador Aguirre. That match went deep into the third round, with Stewart getting the pin at the 5:32 mark. Two Falcons took third on the day, Josh McFarland and Darren Stewart. The two combined for seven wins and three pin victories. Prestin Vondra took fifth and Brock Schaecher took sixth on the day. Click here for a full photo gallery of the day. Cameron Wilkinson continued his incredible season by taking first at 106 pounds. He took down fellow Warrior Calli Wilkinson by pin to start his day. He then pinned Cory Romej of Elgin Public/Pope John before beating Isaiah Shields of Amherst 13-7 for the championship. Andrew Herley also took first pinning Brady Haughton of Fullerton and Jaegher Ogden of West Holt in less than 30 seconds each. He then took down Randolph's Alex Schmit 6-4 to advance to the finals. Their, he met Nebraska Christian's Juan Lasso. The match was a true battle, with Herley eventually coming out on top with a late pin. Calli Wilkinson took fifth thanks to wins over Niobrara/Verdigre's Toby Ives and Crofton/Bloomfield's Nathan Schmidt. Jayden Arehart also took fifth as a result of wins over West Holt's Austin Smith, Clarkson/Leigh's Tim Zimmerman and Amherst's Jarrin Potts. Click here to see the full photo gallery of the day. Macke recorded her second double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and pulling in 13 total rebounds, including five offensively. She also dished out four assists and came away with four steals. All while only giving up one turnover and not committing a single foul. That fantastic stat line was vital in the Cyclones' tight 43-41 win over Osmond Friday night. Clearwater-Orchard trailed for much of the game, entering the final quarter of play down 31-27. However, a big 16-10 quarter gave them the win on the night. While Macke's fantastic night certainly stole the show, Kylie Thiele and Brooklynn Chipps had solid games as well, posting nine and seven points, respectively. The boys weren't able to duplicate the success of their classmates as they struggled to keep up with the hot-shooting Tigers. O-C shot just 26 percent from the floor in a 69-30 loss. Liam Odell was the only Cyclone in double figures, scoring 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting. Jacob Long did his work down low, pulling in eight total rebounds. |
