After a regular season that saw the Warriors go 20-3, Neligh-Oakdale now knows the subdistrict fate of their boys.
The Warriors earned the top seed and a first-round bye in the Class C2-6 subdistrict tournament. They will play their first game on Tuesday, February 21 at 6 p.m. at O'Neill high school. They await the winner of the Ainsworth/Creighton showdown. The Neligh-Oakdale girls held on to win their first round game in the Class C2-6 subdistrict at O'Neill on Monday night.
The Lady Warriors edged out Niobrara/Verdigre, 45-42, after taking control of the second half. The game started out with both teams trading buckets and the lead bounced back and forth. The first quarter ended with the Cougars clinging to a four-point advantage, 11-7. Neligh-Oakdale outscored their opponent in the second quarter, and a last second shot by Kinsley Klabenes tied it up at 22-all at halftime. The Lady Warriors continued to roll and were up, 37-29, heading into the final quarter of play. N-O was able to hold off a late surge by NV in the fourth to pick up the three-point win. Klabenes led the team with 17 points and 9 rebounds, followed by Alexis Jensen with 10, Jaclynn Hixson 9, Kayla Wright 5, Bailey Frey 3 and Jayda Chance 1. Clearwater-Orchard and Elkhorn Valley met in the opening round of the D1-6 subdistrict tournament in Plainview on Monday. The two squads battled in the first half, with the Falcons entering the break with a slim 28-24 lead. However, the second half was all Elkhorn Valley as they held the Cyclones to just three points in the third and cruised to a 59-41 victory to eliminate the Cyclones. The Falcons were led by Hannah Ollendick's 14 points and Olivia Nall's 10. As a team, EV finished at 53 percent shooting in the win. Alyssa Rood was effective down low for the Falcons, adding nine points and seven rebounds. For Clearwater-Orchard, Allison Kerkman led the way with 11 points. She almost recorded her first double-double of the year in unique fashion, coming away with an impressive nine steals. Those nine steals also happened to be a new Clearwater-Orchard single-game record. Kinzly Macke and Katie Stearns added nine points each and pulled down 10 and eight rebounds, respectively. Elkhorn Valley advances to the second round of the tournament where they will meet North Central on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Plainview. The Cyclones season ends at 11-11. Wilkinson will meet Jaydon Walker of Hemingford at 106 pounds. Herley will take on Thayer Central's Damian Stewart in the opening round of the 132-pound bracket. D2 district runner-up Elkhorn Valley will send a busload of wrestlers to the meet. At 113 pounds, Dillon Stewart will take the mat against Wade Wright of East Butler. Alejandro Martinez will start his day at 120 pounds against Scribner-Snyder's Justin Noel. Darren Stewart will meet Jesse Evans of Dundy County-Stratton in the first round at 132 pounds. Prestin Vondra drew a matchup with Brody Lewis of Franklin at 138 pounds. At 145, Josh McFarland will meet Medicine Valley's Dylan Davis-Mack. The Falcons trailed 36-27 entering the final quarter of play. They cranked out 15 points in the fourth quarter but were unable to come out on top as the Beavers put up nine points for a 45-42 victory. Kalen Dittrich led all Falcons with 15 points. Brayden Effle had a huge night for Elkhorn Valley. He scored 12 points and pulled in 16 total rebounds for his fifth double-double of the year. He also tied for the team high in assists with four. Dalton Smutny added eight points and Austin Miller dropped in seven. Elkhorn Valley entered the day with eight wrestlers with a shot at the state tournament. At the end of the day, seven Falcons had punched their ticket.

At 113, Dillon Stewart qualified for his second-straight state tournament by taking home the district championship. After pinning his only opponent on Friday, he repeated the feat twice on Saturday, pinning both Dustin Klingsporn of Axtell and Tate Phillipps of Burwell to secure first place. At 120, Alejandro Martinez qualified for his third state tournament by taking first place. He started the day with a 12-0 victory over Elgin Public/Pope John's Logan Henn. The N-O girls started out the game strong and finished the first quarter in a 7-7 tie. In the Wolfpack's 53-39 win over the Cyclones, EPPJ's Baylee Wemhoff reached the 1,000-point milestone on her way to 12 points. Wemhoff is averaging 10.7 points per game this season and has averaged 11.9 points per game for her career with the Wolfpack. "Baylee is an incredible athlete that worked for this big accomplishment for four years," said Wolfpack coach Randy Eisenhauer. "She was a person that put the hours in to succeed. She also has had great teammates surrounding her to accomplish this goal. Baylee has been a four-year starter who has impacted the team each year in a positive way. She is a great leader on the court and keeps everything going. Baylee is a kid that affects her teammates in a positive way day in and day out. She is a great teammate to all and without her teammates goals like this cant happen." To go along with her 12 points, Allyson Wemhoff added a game-high 13 points while Jordan Mescher dropped in 12 as well. Liz Selting added eight points while pulling in 11 rebounds. For Clearwater-Orchard, Allee Snider was impressive in her first double-double performance of the year. She finished with 12 points on 67 percent shooting and pulled in 13 rebounds. Brooklynn Chipps added 10 points and Kinzly Macke finished with nine points. In the late game, the EPPJ boys won a thriller over the Cyclones in dramatic fashion, 57-56. The Cyclones entered the break up 26-25 but the Wolfpack battled back to tie the game up entering the final period of play. In that final period, the two teams took turns delivering blows, but it was the Wolfpack that came out on top in the end as O-C couldn't complete one of their final attempts as they fell. Three EPPJ players finished in double figures, led by Chad Bode's 18 points. Ashton Evans finished with 14 points and Hunter Reestman dropped in 10. Kenny Bush did his damage under the net, pulling in 12 rebounds to pace the Wolfpack. For the Cyclones, Blake Hoke dropped in 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including three from deep. Travis Kerkman was almost unstoppable in the middle for O-C finishing with a double-double of 13 points and 16 rebounds, with five of his boards coming on the offensive end. Jacob Long returned to action to add 10 points for O-C. It was an all-Antelope County showdown in the championship game of the N-O Club Junior High Tournament in Neligh on Thursday night.

Elkhorn Valley continued to extend their lead and eventually earned the 38-18 win for the championship. Members of the Falcon team are Reed Bennett, Jaxson Eischeid, Derek Hahne, Conner Klein, Conner Larsen, Carter Rautenberg, Colten Rystrom, Dylan Wright, Hunter Bennett, Jacon Cleveland, Trevin Hanson, Adam Miller, Braedyn Ollendick, and Caden Reikofski They are coached by Brandon Black and Scott Klein. For nearly a decade, the Cyclones have been a mainstay in Northeast Nebraska athletics. They have qualified for the state football playoffs eight times, including an incredible Cinderella run in 2015 that saw them finish one win away from the championship game. They have sent two boys basketball teams to the state tournament and dozens of athletes have qualified for the state track meet in various events. With the recent vote by the Clearwater Original Board to dissolve the reorganization agreement between the two schools, the future of Cyclone athletics is now in serious jeopardy. At this point, the results of the vote are still pending action at the Unified Board meeting and no decision has been made on any further cooperation between the two schools in regard to athletics, but if the course continues and the two schools do split, it is highly possible that the Cyclones will as well. In fact, Nebraska School Activities Association Executive Director Dr. Jim Tenopir said he has never seen separating schools stay together on the field or the court. “I’ve not seen that, but stranger things have happened,” he said. “Its not beyond the realm of possibility and if in fact the unification is dissolved, they (Clearwater-Orchard) are probably going to have to look at doing something with co-op to be able to stay together.” If the two schools do decide to follow through with discontinuing the agreement and subsequently discontinue their cooperation in the school’s various activities, most sports will actually see very little issue from the standpoint of the NSAA (should there be enough students to field teams). However, the one exception is football. All NSAA activities, except football, work on one-year cycles. Teams register and schedule their opponents each and every year. However, football operates on a two-year cycle. That means schedules are made among the schools two years in advance. Referees and locations are lined up as soon as the schedules are completed. The reason that is an issue for Clearwater-Orchard is next year will be year two of the current cycle, meaning that the Cyclones are locked into next season or risk forfeiting the entire year. “Next year is the second year of that two-year scheduling,” said Dr. Tenopir. “If the two schools would decide that they are not going to be together for football, they really don’t have an option. There is no place that they can turn to schedule independently. We have been very specific with schools that they have to sign up for the two-year period and that there is not an opportunity to dissolve that football relationship mid-cycle.” In any other sport but football, if the numbers allow, each school would be able to field its own teams without issue, assuming they could create their schedule and provide the adequate referees and locations needed. However, in football, the NSAA does not allow co-op agreements to be made mid-cycle. Because the Cyclones have committed to the NSAA that they are a consolidated team for the two years of 2016-17, they either play together next season or not at all. Neither Clearwater nor Orchard students could join with schools such as Ewing, O’Neill or Verdigre, for example, if they don’t play together as the Cyclones. If Clearwater and Orchard wanted to compete in football next year after the consolidation is dissolved, they basically have two options. One school could take on the Clearwater-Orchard Cyclone title, if the NSAA board would allow them to do so, and compete on the football field for next year while the other school does not play at all. That option would be unlikely, according to Dr. Tenopir, if either school had an objection to the other taking the team name. The second option would be to apply to the NSAA board for a special exception. The special exception would be to enter into a co-op mid-cycle. The board would review the issue and determine whether to allow the co-op to be made at that point and, if so, for how long. The NSAA board could approve the co-op for a two-year cycle if the two schools requested; however, that is unlikely as it would put the schools and the NSAA in the same situation in the middle of the next cycle. The likely result, according to Dr. Tenopir, would be a one-year exception for the co-op, pending NSAA approval. At the end of the one year, the two schools could go their separate ways if they choose. Many students, parents, teachers and citizens of the two towns await further decision on the relationship between Clearwater and Orchard. While many sports will remain unaffected, outside of the obvious, the athletes waiting for next football season must wait to learn their fate as well as the school’s. Girls basketball subdistrict brackets have been released, and three Antelope County teams will be busy.
No. 4 Elkhorn Valley and No. 5 Clearwater-Orchard will play at 7 p.m. on Monday at the D1-6 district in Plainview. The winner will play No. 1 North Central at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. EPPJ earned the second seed and will play No. 3 Boyd County at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Neligh-Oakdale girls basketball team will take on Niobrara/Verdigre on Monday night in the first round of the C2-6 subsdistricts in O'Neill.
The Warriors earned the fifth seed and will play No. 4 Niobrara/Verdigre at 7 p.m. at O'Neill High School. The winner will play No. 1 West Holt at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. With the season dwindling to an end, the Neligh-Oakdale basketball and dance teams celebrated parents night at their final home game.
In between the Warriors' two showdowns with Battle Creek, the students recognized their parents for their support and dedication throughout the year. See below for a full photo gallery. Elgin Public/Pope John made the trek to Bartlett Tuesday night and came home with a split against a couple of tough Chambers/Wheeler Central squads.
The girls started the night off with a big win over the Renegades. Both squads traded blows early, with the game remaining tight throughout the first half. However, in the third quarter, EPPJ exploded for 23 points while holding the Renegades to just 12. That big quarter proved to be the difference as the Wolfpack came away with a 66-52 win. Four Wolfpack players reached double figures, led by an impressive 21-point performance by Allyson Wemhoff. Lydia Behnk added 14 points and pulled in seven rebounds. Baylee Wemhoff dropped in 12 points and Liz Selting added 10. The boys weren't quite as fortunate against the Renegades in a 52-40 loss. The Wolfpack were held scoreless throughout the entire first quarter of play while CWC jumped out to a 24-0 lead. EPPJ then outscored the Renegades over the next three quarters, but it wasn't quite enough to come back from the big deficit. Ashton Evans and Chad Bode finished with 11 and 10 points respectively. Bode also pulled in eight rebounds and Hunter Reestman added six. |
