The NSAA has released the 2018 wrestling brackets for the state championships, February 15-17.
Neligh-Oakdale, Clearwater-Orchard, Elgin Public/Pope John, and Elkhorn Valley will wrestle in Class D at the Centurylink Center in Omaha. The lady Wolfpack swept the Cyclones finishing 59-20 to put prepare them for sub-districts this week. Finishing the first quarter Leading Elgin Public/Pope John in scoring was Lydia Behnk and Allyson Wemhoff tying for 11 points, and Paige Meis and Calli Krebs following right behind with 10 on the board. For the Cyclones, Brooklynn Chipps lead with 7 points, and Julia Thiele and Katie Stearns with 4. OC 1 6 7 6 20 EPPJ 16 16 14 13 59 Turning over to the boys game, the Cyclones and Wolfpack kept both fans on their toes with a back and forth score to the Cyclones by surprise. Clearwater/Orchard took the lead with a last minute three pointer for a 29-26 going into halftime. Continuing their lead, OC was able to pull ahead finishing the game over the Wolfpack 70-48. Leading the cyclones in scoring was Blake Hoke with 23 points, Jake Long following just behind with 20, and Ryan Wilhelm rounding them out with 17. For the Wolfpack, Kyle Schumacher lead the team with 17 points, Ashton Evans with 11, and Hunter Reestman just behind with 10. The Warriors hung in there during the first half of play, trailing 36-21 at the break, but eventually fell to the Huskies, 68-42. Five Warriors punched their ticket to next week’s state tournament by finishing in the top four at the meet — juniors Cameron Wilkinson and Andrew Herley, sophomore Kaleb Pofahl and freshmen Brock Kester and Caleb Payne. Neligh-Oakdale went into Saturday’s action with 10 wrestlers vying for a state berth, including Cody Booth, Cade Wilkinson, Colton Klabenes, Jayden Arehart and Dawson Kaup. Logan Henn began districts in ultimate fashion Friday by winning his 100th career victory to lead the Wolfpack wrestlers at districts.
Henn pinned Jakob Hogan of High Plains in a mere 23 seconds for his milestone win. Like clockwork, he then pinned Colby Harney in 54 seconds to go into Saturday undefeated. Also for the Wolfpack, Luke Henn went 2-1 to keep his state hopes alive. Hayes Miller and Cameron Nielsen both saw their season come to an end Friday. Spencer Kester, Eli Thiele, James Kester, Joseph Ferris, Eli Macke, Houston Marino and Austin Pokorny all saw their seasons come to an end Friday at Oakland Craig. Clay Thiele, Donaven Nolze and Tommie Peed will go into Saturday action undefeated while Rafe Grebin, Codey Snider and Zach King all have one loss and will have to continue wrestling back through the consolation rounds. Heart and believing are two words Gary Davis was heard saying over and over Friday evening following a string of cosolation matches in the Class D-1 district at Weeping Water.
Ten of 11 Warriors advanced to Saturday's action, keeping their chance at qualifying for state as a reality. Colton Klabenes, Jayden Arehart and Dawson Kaup all won consolation matches to keep hopes alive. Arehart and Kaup both dominated their matches with Arehart earning a pin in 17 seconds and Kaup in 41 seconds. Klabenes held a a 4-0 lead going into the third period but found himself down 5-4 with just seconds to go. That's when he flipped Trevor Schumacher of Howells-Dodge to grab the decisive 9-5 decision. Cody Booth also lost in the second round but received a bye in the consolations. CWC went 2-0 against the Wolfpack teams, getting by the EPPJ girls 45-41, and topping the boys 73-60. In the girls game, it was a tale of two halves. The Lady Pack jumped out to an early lead and held a 28-10 advantage at the half. The Renegades unleashed their offense in the third, scoring 19 points while holding EPPJ to just 3. A strong final quarter led to CWC's 4-point win. The girls fell at the hands of Ewing, 49-25, and the OC boys cruised to a 61-18 win over the Tigers. In the girls matchup, OC started out strong, trailing by just 3 points after one quarter of play. But, the Lady Tigers turned up their offense and widened an insurmountable margin by the end of the third. In a couple of close matchups, the Elkhorn Valley girls edged CV for a 58-54 victory, but the Cougars bested the boys, 44-34. The girls got off to a sluggish start, but, in an explosive fourth quarter, the Lady Falcons poured in 26 points to overcome an 8-point deficit and claim the victory. Hannah Ollendick lit up the scoreboard as she put up 26 points in the win. Amber Miller also hit double digits by draining 17 points. Others scoring for EV were Bri Werner with 9, and Haley Fleetwood, Olivia Nall and Sierra Delilah with 2 each. In the boys game, the Falcons fell behind 14-7 in the first quarter, but were able to play even with Central Valley for much of the game after that. The early deficit proved to be too much for EV to overcome and they eventually fell by 10. Kalen Dittrich led the Falcons with 11 points and 8 rebounds, followed by Braedyn Ollendick with 8, Brayden Effle 5, Julio Sierra and Isiah Greenhalgh 3 apiece, and Dalton Smutny and Bryson Anderson 2 each. The Cyclones wrapped up their last Clearwater home game with an eventful night of tied scores, overtime and even some little kids halftime basketball.
Taking on Elkhorn Valley in Clearwater, the two teams split their games with the lady Falcons taking the win and the Cyclone boys finishing in overtime. After a tough girls matchup, the Falcons were able to pull away taking the Cyclones last home game 64-32. The game was close for the first quarter with the Cyclones just behind one point at 13-12. Pulling ahead by 15 points, the Falcons were able to go into halftime with a 31-16 score over OC. In the third, Elkhorn Valley continued to dominate 46-22 and securing their win in the fourth. Leading the lady Falcons in points was Jasmine Wiese with 14 points, following right behind was Hannah Ollendick at 13 points, Bri Werner with 10, and Amber Miller with 9. Finishing the night for the Cyclone was Katie Stearns with 12 points, Brooklynn Chipps with 10, and Grace Rittscher with 4. The Elkhorn Valley and Clearwater-Orchard boy’s game proved to be a thriller with a tied score at nearly the end of every quarter and finally finishing the game in overtime. The Cyclones were able to come out on top with a final of 66-58 over the Falcons. Finishing the first quarter, the teams went into the second with a tied score of 13-13. Heading into halftime, they kept the tied score alive at 24-24. Finally breaking the tied score streak, the Cyclones were able to pull ahead in the third quarter 45-38 over the Falcons. Taking the game into overtime, Bryson Anderson hit three-pointer with just seconds left to tie the score at 55-55. Unable to keep up with the Cyclones in overtime, the Falcons fell 58-66. Leading the Falcons in points was Braedyn Ollendick with 21, Brayden Effle followed not far behind with 12, and Brandon Evans finished with 8 points. Finishing the night with 27 points was Jake Long, Blake Hoke following with 15, and Ryan Wilhelm with 11 points. The Cyclones next game will be against Ewing in Orchard. The lady Falcons will take on Humphrey St. Francis on Thursday and the boys with take on St. Edward on Saturday. The Warriors and Braves battled it out in Battle Creek on Tuesday night.
Battle Creek defended its home court and came away with both wins. The Bravettes downed the Lady Warriors, 66-27, and the BC boys defeated the Warriors, 52-26. In the girls game, Battle Creek forced 28 turnovers and capitalized on them. The Bravettes took a big lead early in the contest, dominating the N-O girls, 22-6, by the end of the first quarter. The Lady Warriors struggled to get an offense going, and a running clock sped things up in the fourth quarter. Bailey Frey led the team with 9 points, followed by Paige Furstenau and Trinity Kurpgeweit with 4 apiece, Brooke Frey and Haley Kerkman with 3 each, and Jaclynn Hixson with 2. In boys action, Neligh-Oakdale traded buckets with Battle Creek in the first quarter, trailing by just 1 point heading into the second. The Braves came out firing before the half, putting up 16 points, while holding the Warriors to just 4. Battle Creek continued to roll in the second half and eventually put the game out of reach for the N-O boys. Nate Buck led the way for the Warriors with 9 points, followed by Cole Belitz with 8, Austin Rice 6, and Hunter Charf 3. Taking a break between the boys and girls basketball games, the Cyclones recognized its players, coaches and parents.
During parent's night, the boys team presented their coaches with a flower, a keepsake shirt, and an OC bracelet for the coaches wives. Seniors, Allison Kerkman, Brooklynn Chipps, Zane Herley, Kirby Willats, and Liam Odell were all recognized for their hard work this season and the rest of their high school career. |
