Three Antelope County seniors have been selected to the 6th Annual Red vs. White Northeast Nebraska All-Star Football Classic.
Clearwater-Orchard's Creston Bertschinger and Andrew Steskal, along with Nate Buck of Neligh-Oakdale will be on the white squad. The game will be played on Saturday, June 9, at Veteran’s Memorial Field in Norfolk. Kickoff is scheduled for noon. Darin Suckstorf of Lutheran High Northeast who will coach the 36-player Red team says he pleased with the pool of players he had to choose from. “We have a great combination of size and speed from programs that historically produce hard-nosed football players,” he said. “I think we’ll have the ability to put some units together offensively and defensively to showcase the athletes.” Suckstorf is looking forward to the week of practice leading up to the game. “I am excited to see these young men come together in a short period of time to represent their communities.” Suckstorf’s staff will include Matt Kuchar of Bloomfield, Ken Swanson of Emerson-Hubbard, Max Kant of Lutheran High Northeast, Kevin Miller of Norfolk Catholic and Russ Plager of Wayne. Andrew Carlson of Battle Creek will coach the 36-player White squad. He likes his team’s blend of size and athleticism. “Offensively, we want to effectively run the ball while taking advantage of some very talented receivers in the passing game,” he said. “Defensively, I really like the length of our secondary and the size of our players that will be playing in the box.” Carlson is anxious to get to know to know his players. “We look forward to getting the team together and watching them compete as well as see many different individual and team roles established,” said Carlson. Joining Carlson on the White staff will be Jeremy Weidner of Madison, Kyle Schmidt of Battle Creek, Anthony Ruzika of Scribner-Snyder, Troy Schlueter of West Point-Beemer and Dustin Sealey of Logan View. The Elkhorn Valley Wrestling Club had 3 members place in the top 8 of their bracket and brought home medals. At this tournament, brackets can range anywhere from 8 individuals in a bracket to as large as 32 individuals in a bracket.
Trigg Bennett competed in the Preschool-Kindergarten division at 45-46 pounds. In Trigg’s first match of the day, he defeated Gehrke of Plattsmouth 16-1 and then defeated Good of Waverly 23-8. His next match would be a tough one, and he was defeated by Turpin of Millard South 16-1. In his last match of the day, Trigg battled back, pinning Ruckman of Beatrice to receive 2nd place. In the 3rd-4th grade division, Nathan Werner competed in the 105 pound weight class. Nathan started off with a big win, pinning Fischer of Sidney in just 56 seconds. Nathan was then defeated by Kuzelka of Fairbury in a close match losing 5-8. Nathan then came away with back-to-back wins, defeating Choutka of Cavalry 9-3 and Troxel of Team CES in a tight match with a final score of 5-4. He then fell to Rasmussen of Chadron. In his final match of the day, Nathan pinned Yonkers of Midwest Destroyers in 1 minute and 35 seconds, earning a 5th place medal. In the 5th-6th grade division, Wyatt Nierodzik competed in the 100 pound weight class. Wyatt received a bye for his first round of the tournament and then was defeated by Arrants from Grand Island. Wyatt received a bye in the next round of the tournament before pinning Miller of Ogallala in a quick 44 seconds. Wyatt then defeated Faust of Lincoln Squires 8-0 before losing to Chamberlin of Battle Creek. Wyatt then defeated Baum of Broken Bow 7-5, and his effort was enough to earn him a 7th place medal. Three Pope John students were selected for Winter NSAA Academic All-State honors.

Clearwater-Orchard shot a 186 and was led by Clay Thiele with a 42. Ryan Wilhelm shot a 43, Gage Clifton carded 45 and Blake Hoke finished with a 46. Rounding out the Cyclones was Zane Herley 52, Codey Snider 56, Rafe Griben 64, Cade Mlnarik 72 and Erin Schwager 78. For Niobrara-Verdigre, Camden Eisenhauer shot a 49. Alexis Hrbek shot 64 and Kendra Hrbek carded 74 as the other varsity scores for Niobrara-Verdigre. One Orchard student was selected for Winter NSAA Academic All-State honors.

Tanner Martensen was third, Corbin Hoefer finished eighth, Micah Hughes was sixth and Cason Hoefer was a state champion. There were up to 32 man brackets and 1,802 total competitors at the state meet. Four Elgin Public basketball players earned recognition from the Niobrara Valley Conference.

Dylan Kaup, a sophomore member of the Wayne State College track team, was named to the 2018 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Winter All-Academic Team. To be eligible for the NSIC Winter All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must be a member of the varsity traveling team and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better. The student-athlete must also be a sophomore in academic and athletic standing. The Wayne State College men's indoor track and field team had the most selections for the Wildcats with 12. In addition to Kaup's academic achievements, he had the sixth best throw in the weight throw in the Northern Sun Division II Conference this season with a toss of 56-3.25. Kaup will compete in the discus and hammer throw during the outdoor season. The Neligh-Oakdale boys and girls track teams kicked off their season at the Doane Invitational Class C Track Meet in Crete on Friday. The girls team placed 6th overall and the boys were 8th.

Juniors Ryan Wilhelm and Blake Hoke were both selected for NVC 1st Team; and Jacob Long was named to the NVC 2nd Team, representing the Cyclone boy's basketball team. Representing the lady Cyclones, senior Brooklynn Chipps and junior Katie Stearns were both named to the NVC Honorable Mention list.
