junior high teams each earned runner up at the Niobrara Valley Conference track meet in Atkinson on Saturday.
Talon Krebs picked up a gold medal for the Warriors when he won the pole vault, tying the NVC meet record at 9-0. His teammates Ashton Higgins and Carson Whitesel took the next two slots, finishing in second and third, respectively. Triple jump and long jump were also strong areas for Neligh-Oakdale as Krebs and teammate Aiden Kuester placed 3rd and 5th in the triple, and Thomas Johnson and Carson Jones finished 3rd and 5th in long jump. In addition, Kuester was 5th in the high jump. In the running events, the Warriors sprinted their way to numerous medals. Jones was 2nd in the 200 and Johnson was 5th in the 100 and 200. Both were also members of the 3rd place 4x100 relay, along with Kuester and Whitesel. Elkhorn Valley’s Carter Rautenberg dominated the discus with a toss of 123-01.5, outthrowing second place by more than 20 feet to win the event. On the girls side, the Falcons may not have grabbed any gold, but they earned plenty of medals in a variety of events, including the 800, 1600, both hurdles, pole vault, triple jump, shot, discus and second place in all three relay events. Lexi Bode of EPPJ won the girls high jump with a leap of 4-8 for the Wolfpack. Sunshine finally welcomed the Warrior golfers on Friday afternoon as they hosted Norfolk Catholic in a dual meet at the Antelope Country Club.
"It was nice to see the sun," Coach Ron Beacom said. "We are starting to strike the ball much better. As we grow as golfers, we'll start to score a little better as well." Norfolk Catholic carded a 176 to win the dual over Neligh-Oakdale, who scored 202 as a team. Junior Austin Rice led the Warriors with a 42, finishing 3rd individually. Other N-O varsity golfers were Neven Kline 49, Garret Belitz 53, Caleb Payne 58 and Brock Kester 68. Trey Svatos and Colby Sehi also competed as part of the B team, shooting a 70 and 79, respectively. "Our course management is still a little rough," he said. "It's hard to recover from a big score on a hole when there are only 9 holes altogether. Consequently, we have played some really good golf at times and not had it reflect in our overall score." Full results below: A windy day and a tough course put the Warrior golfers to the test Thursday afternoon in Columbus.
Eleven varsity teams and 64 individual golfers competed in the Columbus Lakeview Golf Invitational played at Quail Run. Junior Austin Rice led the Warriors with a 97, tying for 16th place. Freshman Garret Belitz wasn't far behind with a 99, tying for 19th place. "We really haven't had a great day for a meet yet," Coach Ron Beacom said. "It was at least warmer but the wind really caused issues for us. We also struggled adjusting to the speed of the greens." Neligh-Oakdale placed 8th in the team standings with a total score of 421. Others playing for the Warriors were Neven Kline 109, Brock Kester 116 and Caleb Payne 118. Five-man teams from Lakeview, Boone Central/ Newman Grove, Central City, Columbus High, Madison, Neligh-Oakdale, Norfolk High, Norfolk Catholic, Schuyler Community Schools, Scotus Central Catholic and Wayne High School all shot at the invitational. "We continue to improve in the area of skill development," Beacom said. "Golf is a game that requires a lot of mental toughness and mental focus. We need to continue to improve in these areas so that we don't let a 'bad hole' ruin our round, or let a poor shot turn into multiple poor shots. In other words, we need to continue to get better at playing in the present and not get caught looking at the past. We are very inexperienced at competition golf. Some of this will get better just from playing more." The next meet for the Warriors is a home dual with Norfolk Catholic at the Antelope Country Club on Friday at 4 p.m. "We have a lot of meets in a short amount of time here," the coach said. "It's important that we continue to compete well and shave a few strokes off of our scores as we begin to near the district meet." Antelope County was well-represented at the Norfolk Classic Track Meet on Thursday, with six medaling in a variety of track and field events.
Jacob Long of Clearwater-Orchard earned medals in both of his events, placing third in the triple jump and fifth in the high jump. Cyclone senior Brooklynn Chipps picked up a fourth place medal in the girls shot put. The lone Falcon at the meet, Amber Miller of Elkhorn Valley vaulted her way to third place in the girls pole vault. Bailey Frey of Neligh-Oakdale earned 4th place in the 300 meter hurdles. For the Wolfpack, Lydia Behnk and Kaylee Martinsen both brought home medals in the triple jump, earning 5th and 6th place, respectively.
