The Neligh-Oakdale volleyball team celebrated parents night on Tuesday night during its annual Pink Out event.
The Warriors have three seniors — Haley Kerkman, Kristen Snodgrass and Ayspen Tarker. Tuesday marked their final home match of the sesaon. Neligh-Oakdale picked up a four-set win over Creighton on Tuesday night as the Warriors celebrated both a Pink Out and parents night.
“We had girls all over the court. I can’t say enough about their fight,” said coach Hannah Hoefer. “We were down a couple of times, and they weren’t getting frantic. They regained focus and never lacked in hustle.” The Warriors utilized a balanced attack with its hitters. Haley Kerkman put down a 13 kills while both Shelby Pitzer and Amanda Dietz powered another 12 kills each. Trinity Kurpgeweit added another seen kills on the night. Kurpgeweit and Paige Furstenau picked up 14 digs in the win. Running their 6-2 offense, Kerkman put up 25 set assists and Claire Whitesel had 19. The Warriors will be back in action Thursday as they travel to top-rated Ewing (19-0). They’ll then play in the Wisner-Pilger tournament on Saturday. “The girls are very up for these challenges. In the past, the girls may not have wanted big games, but they want to play and see where we compare to these solid teams.” Creighton 23 23 25 21 Neligh-Oakdale 25 25 22 25 Neligh-Oakdale: Paige Furstenau 1k, 14d, 1sa; Trinity Kurpgeweit 7k, 3a, 14d; Brooke Frey 2k, 1b, 2d; Amanda Dietz 12k, 2d; Shelby PItzer 12k, 6d; Haley Kerkman 13k, 1a, 1b, 10d, 25sa, Aubrie Klabenes 2k, 2d; Claire Whitesel 1a, 3d, 19sa; Kristen Snodgrass 1k, 3a. Both the Elkhorn Valley and Crofton girls golf teams wrapped up their seasons at Monday's C-3 District Tournament at Norfolk Country Club.
Battle Creek won the team district title with a score of 426. Norfolk Catholic was second, Hartington Cedar Catholic was third and West Holt was fourth. All four teams qualified for next week's state tournament. Anna Kassmeier of Norfolk Catholic won a three-way playoff against Ireland Billoft of HCC and Sydney Erickson of Pierce to claim the individual district title. The Lady Falcons placed eighth as a team with a team score of 543. Crofton's Delayne Sudbeck placed 15th individually. EV senior Kimberly Frey led the Lady Falcons with a 25th-place finish. Other EV placers included Erica Brown in 35th, Journey Werner in 43rd, Angel Qualset in 44th and Kristy Nierodzik in 54th. The state girls golf tournament begins Monday and wraps up Tuesday at North Platte. A solid defensive effort guided the Neligh-Oakdale junior high football team to a 36-6 victory over Elkhorn Valley last week.
The Warriors forced three turnovers and had a shutout going until two minutes remained in the contest. N-O's offense did plenty of damage in the first quarter, jumping out to a 22-0 lead. Austin Rudolf took the opening kickoff back 60 yards, setting up a two-yard rushing touchdown by Aiden Kuester. Kuester found Bryson Gadeken for the two-point conversion, putting the Warriors ahead 8-0. On N-O's next two possessions, Kuester broke free for a 20-yard and 45-yard TD runs. Chase Furstenau extended the Warriors' advantage to 28-0 after a 28-yard scoring pass to Gadeken. On the Falcons' next possession, Kuester tackled the ball-carrier in the end zone for a safety, giving the maroon and white a 30-0 lead at half. Kuester scored the final touchdown for Neligh-Oakdale on a 44-yard scamper in the third. The defense played stellar all game, led by Carson Whitesel's nine tackles and one caused fumble. Furstenau collected an interception and two tackles, Kuester recovered two fumbles, to go along with his eight tackles, Gadeken collected four tackles, while Landon Schrader, Keegan Payne, Gavin Longsdorth, Tanner Martensen, Trysten Coover and Colson Krebs each tallied a tackle in the win. Neligh-Oakdale's Jacob Henry, Martensen, Schrader and Gadeken anchored the offensive line, who allowed the Warriors to record 211 yards of total offense. Kuester led the way with 110 yards on the ground, three rushing touchdowns and 32 yards through the air on four-of-four passing. Whitesel rushed for 36 yards, Furstenau had five yards rushing, 24 yards passing and a passing touchdown, Coover had four yards on the ground and Krebs ran for three yards. Gadeken caught four passes for 32 yards and a score, while Whitesel accounted for two receptions for 24 yards. Neligh-Oakdale (3-0) travels to Orchard to face the Cyclones Monday at 5 p.m. The Riverside football team proved to be too much for the Elgin Public/Pope John squad, as the Chargers rolled to an 80-0 win Friday.
Riverside opened the first quarter with 46 points to take firm control of the contest. The Wolfpack never got their offense going, as EPPJ was held to 107 yards of total offense and turned the ball over four times. Kyle Schumacher led the Wolfpack with 40 yards rushing and 28 yards passing. Cory Romej rushed for 28 yards and Adam Dreger recorded 26 yards of total offense. Schumacher led the defense with seven tackles and R.J. Lierman tallied an interception. Elgin Public/Pope John (1-4) returns to action Friday at Humphrey St. Francis at 7 p.m. A sloppy performance by the Neligh-Oakdale football team, cost the Warriors in their 38-20 loss to Howells-Dodge Friday.
"They're a good football team," commented N-O coach Ron Beacom. "I thought we matched up well and I thought if we played well, we had a real shot at it and we had to limit our mistakes. Unfortunately, we made more mistakes than they did and that was the difference in the game." The Jaguars scored on their opening drive with a 49-yard TD scamper by Josh Brester. N-O answered with a Hunter Charf one-yard touchdown plunge to cut the deficit to two. H-D scored 22 unanswered points to claim a 30-6 advantage late in the second quarter. The Warriors got back in the scoring column with a 10 play, 47-yard drive ending in an Andrew Herley score from three yards out to end the half. The defenses took over in the third quarter as neither team scored in the third. Following a turnover on downs by H-D, Charf found Garret Belitz for an 11-yard touchdown pass, to cut the deficit to 10 with under 10 minutes remaining in the game. Each team exchanged turnover on downs and interceptions before the Jags sealed the game with a four-yard TD run by Dylan Horejsi with two minutes remaining. Miscues plagued N-O throughout the game. The Warriors turned the ball over twice, botched numerous snaps and allowed Charf to be sacked six times. “I don't fault our kids because I thought they played hard and at times I thought we out played them (H-D)," Beacom said. "But give them (H-D), they have a nice team, they use their kids well, they know their personnel and they took advantage of what their personnel can do. When you play a team like that, you can't make more mistakes than they do." Herley rushed for just over 50 yards and a score. Charf recorded a rushing and passing touchdowns, while Austin Rice recorded 67 yards receiving and had an interception on defense. Horejsi led H-D with 126 yards rushing and two TDs. Darrin Pokorny went 12-of-15 for 161 yards and two scores and Luke Rocheford caught five passes for 50 yards and two touchdowns. Horejsi had 100 yards rushing at halftime, but the Warriors shutdown the run game in the second half to give themselves a chance to rally. “The biggest thing was we told the kids on the backside they had to play down the line," Beacom noted. "They bring a lot kids to the point of attack when they run their sweep. You do a good job at the point of attack, if you stand them up and your kids on the backside make the tackle while he's dancing and looking for his crease. I thought our kids on the backside did a better job of playing down the line and making those tackles from the backside so he couldn't go anywhere." Howells-Dodge (3-2) travels to Elkhorn Valley Friday at 2:30 p.m. Neligh-Oakdale (2-3) hosts Madison Friday at 3 p.m. “It doesn't matter who's on their jersey, you have to play against a faceless opponent," Beacom concluded. "Every team is going to have an athlete that can make a play and a lineman that's pretty tough up front. It comes down to we're going to play a certain way on every down, regardless of who's across from us. If we do that, we can compete with just about anybody." The Elkhorn Valley football team fought hard against ninth-ranked (in Class D-1) Lutheran High Northeast Friday at Memorial Park Field, but lost to the Eagles, 60-24.
"What's not lost in this is their (EV) effort," stated Elkhorn Valley mentor Brendan Dittmer. "It's not a part of us to want to quit. These boys play pretty hurt sometimes and normally I'd take them out, but they gutted it out and played hard. I'm more proud of this team for being different than previous Elkhorn Valley teams. We only had 12 guys go out and when we had a guy go down and were down to 11, these guys took a lot of pride in being a different team. It's a feeling in the locker room and they are playing for each other." The Falcons fell behind early after LHNE scored three quick touchdowns to claim a 20-0 lead. Josh McFarland got Elkhorn Valley on the board with a four-yard TD run. The Eagles responded with two unanswered scores to extend their lead to 36-6. McFarland collected his second rushing touchdown on a five-yard score on the next drive. The two teams exchanged scores before LHNE scored on a late second-quarter drive to take a 52-24 lead into the locker room. The Falcon defense stiffened up in the second half, giving up just one score and forcing three turnovers in the second half. "We talked mostly at halftime about defense," Dittmer said. "They did a good job and outside of one pass play, we stopped the run a lot better than we did in the first half. I was proud of our adjustments and our effort." McFarland led the offense with 76 yards rushing and two scores. Ollendick passed for 181 yards and ran for a TD. Miller caught six passes for 113 yards. Brock Schaecher added 72 yards of offense and recorded an interception and fumble recovery on defense. "We have some weapons on offense and we fully expected to move the ball," Dittmer noted. "We used different things with motion and our running game got going and that helped us. In the second half, Lutheran High made some adjustments and stopped our running games and we couldn't get the passing game going as well." LHNE scored on all but one drive with the starters. Jaxson Kant and Kalvin Watts each rushed for more than a 100 yards and two scores. Kant threw for more than 170 yards and three TDs and Ben Genhardt had more than a 100 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Lincoln High Northeast (4-1) hits the road to face Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Friday at 7 p.m. Elkhorn Valley (2-3) hosts Howells-Dodge Friday at 2:30 p.m. "Building into next week, this is possibly the best team in the district," Dittmer concluded. "They (EV) know they have a fighting chance when we put up points. We just have to figure out the defensive end. We have to figure out how to play on both ways, how to get the ball back on defense and how to be able to go down the field and be an eight to ten-play team, Moving forward, we're going to take the confidence from previous weeks, know we can do it on offense and get better." One local coach was so happy with his team’s efforts that he was doing cartwheels after Thursday’s cross country meet in Atkinson.
Neligh-Oakdale and Elkhorn Valley runners participated against some of the top competitors in the state at the West Holt Invitational. In fact, the girls and boys champions, Rylee Rice and Ben Arens, both of Ainsworth, set new meet records Thursday. There were 75 girls and 112 boys from 22 schools in the invite. The top 20 in each race earned medals. And the Warrior and Falcon runners proved that they are among the best. Neligh-Oakdale’s Emma Bixler and Cole Belitz once again led the way for the Warrior teams, both shattering the school’s records for the Atkinson course. Ironically, both of the broken records were their own. Bixler ran a 20:52 for a 6th place finish, eclipsing her previous record of 21:31, which she set last season. Belitz earned 3rd place in the boys race with a time of 17:53, crushing his old record of 18:28 from 2017. Also placing for the Warriors was Griffin Claussen, who sprinted his way to 18th place in a time of 18:56. “This was the first time in over two decades that we’ve had two medalists in this boy’s race,” N-O Coach Rick Eickholt said. “And they’ve added teams, competitive teams, over the last couple of years.” This was why the Warrior coach was spotted doing cartwheels at the end of the medal ceremony. “There was just loads and loads of talent on both the girls and boys sides,” he said. “We challenged Griffin today to run towards the top of the pack, and his 18th place finish is the first time in two decades that we’ve had two medalists in the boy’s meet here.” Elkhorn Valley’s Hunter Bennett was just seconds off the Falcon course record, which he set last season. Bennett was clocked at 18:05 as he dashed to a 6th place finish. He holds the EV school record for the West Holt course with last season’s time of 18:02. In the girls race, Bixler was joined by Neligh-Oakdale’s Hailey Bixler, who ran a 26:08 for 48th place, and Sydney Olson, who crossed the finish line in 29:28 for 65th. “Emma ran a really good race,” Eickholt said. “And we targeted ahead of time, between 5th and 7th, is what we had talked about. I think only two of the runners that finished in front of her today are actually runners from our district, so that’s a real positive. Again, I thought Hailey and Sydney ran very well again today too.” In the boys race, Belitz and Claussen were Neligh-Oakdale’s top finishers, followed by Ashton Higgins in 46th (20:35), Christian Carothers in 49th (20:39), Thomas Johnson in 57th (20:43), Cameron Wilkinson in 61st (20:59), Isaias Juarez in 74th (21:51) and Jose Luna in 78th (21:57). “On the boys side, our whole boys team really stepped it up today,” Eickholt said. “We looked at the boys race and initially, we kinda talked and even Cole mentioned maybe 6th or 7th or possibly even 8th. And he finished 3rd, so that was amazing. And the whole rest of the team, I kind of verbally challenged a couple of them today to do certain things and they really stepped up and ran well.” The coach said it was one of their best team performances in recent years. “I can’t remember a boys team effort that I’m more proud of than what the boys did today,” he said. “It might have to go all the way back to the last time that the boys won the NENAC meet when we went in as a 3rd or 4th seed and pulled off a little bit of an upset to win the meet. We just ran real well today, all the way up and down the line, especially some of our younger kids. We ran as a pack throughout the race which helped us. Again, I’m very, very proud of their efforts today.” The Warriors placed 6th in the boys team standings. Falcon coach Janet Rood was still smiling long after her runners had crossed the finish line. “We are super excited because we had one senior high and one junior high runner place, and everybody had really good times,” Rood said. Bennett picked up 6th in the high school boys race and Tristian Smith earned 10th in the junior high boys division. Rounding out the 8th place EV boys team were Damian Smith in 42nd (20:27), Brandon Evans in 44th (20:30), Walter Furstenau in 54th (20:41), Reed Bennett in 55th (20:41), Colten Rystrom in 71st (21:37), Conner Klein in 99th (24:00) and Dylan Wright in 105th (24:51). “I think my freshmen are competing really well against the other freshmen here because most of my freshmen were in the top third,” Rood said. “One junior even had a good PR here today. I’m just super excited today.” Neligh-Oakdale and Elkhorn Valley will travel to Bassett on Friday for the Niobrara Valley Conference meet. Neligh-Oakdale picked up a pair of wins Thursday night during a road trip to Pender, capping a 5-1 week.
The Warriors defeated the host 25-22, 21-25, 25-22 before dominating Emerson-Hubbard, 25-5, 25-18 as nearly all players saw court time. The Cyclones took an early 20-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to touchdown runs by Chris Kester, Jacob Long and Eli Macke. It was a defensive struggle for the next two quarters as each team mustered just eight points each heading into the final stanza. The OC defense played stellar defense in the second half, picking off the Bronco's quarterback, Ethan Sattler, three times. Blake Hoke recorded two interceptions and Macke's pick led to a Kester two-yard TD plunge in the fourth. The green and black outscored Stuart, 26-8 in the fourth to secure its third-straight win. The Clearwater/Orchard volleyball team picked up two crucial victories Thursday in the Lady Cyclones home tri-match against Wausa and Niobrara/Verdigre at Clearwater.
"Tonight was a great night for the girls," stated OC mentor Sierra Summers. "They played well and came out with more energy. When we were down they didn't give up and showed they had some fight left. As we move farther into the season I am happy with how we are increasing our level of play when it matters most." OC rallied the defeat Wausa in three sets to open the day.l, 20-25, 25-13 and 25-19. A few big runs by the Lady Vikings guided Wausa to the first set win. Trailing 7-6, the purple and gold went on a 10-3 run to claim an eight-point lead. OC responded with a 9-1 run to cut the deficit to one, but three-straight kills by Esther Nelson reclaimed the momentum and Wausa won the opening set. "In the huddle decided we needed to communicate better and start hitting hard through the blocks," commented Stearns. Both teams scratched and clawed for the early momentum to start a decisive third set. In the first 20 points there was seven ties and five different lead changes. Once again the Lady Cyclones pulled away with eight consecutive points. Johnston and Stearns each recorded three points in the run. "We started playing together as a team and focused on what to do to get better and get the win," Stearns said. Wausa attempted a late comeback, but the deficit was too much as OC won the set and the match. "I thought we played pretty well in the first match," said Wausa coach Greg Conn. "The second set got away from us early in passing, but we came back and we played really strong. Clearwater/Orchard is a good ball club." The Lady Vikings bounced back with a two-set victory over Niobrara/Verdigre, 27-25 and 25-19. "We had to come back in that first set and that says a lot about our kids," Conn continued. "Niobrara/Verdigre has a nice team and they played pretty well. Our character came out and we played well." The first set was a back-and-forth battle between the two Knox County squads. The Lady Cougars pulled away late with a 12-5 run to give N/V set point at 24-21. Wausa answered by scoring six of the next seven points to win the set. The second set started the same as the first, until the Lady Vikings used an 8-2 run to claim a 16-10 advantage. Nissen scored six of the eight points in the run for Wausa. Behind eight kills by Nissen, the purple and gold pulled away to win the set and the match. "We worked together, keep each other up and encourage each other," Nissen added. "We keep the positively flowing. When we get rolling, we try not to let the intensity drop. We try to keep it up and work as hard a swe can." In the final match of the evening, OC surged past N/V in two sets, 25-23 and 25-13. Avery Cheatum collected nine kills and 15 digs, Stearns recorded six aces and nine kills and Tuttle accounted for 15 digs and 47 assists. Niobrara/Verdigre (1-15) welcome Winside to town Tuesday. "It was one of those nights we came out and competed, but we got beat because we didn't make adjustments," stated N-O mentor Hannah Hoefer. "Plain and simple, they (Plainview) started picking up what we were throwing and we didn't make the adjustments on the court." The Lady Warriors opened the night with a two-set victory over the Queen Bees, 25-11 and 25-22. It was all N-O to open the match, as they scored 21 of the first 26 points on its way to a 16-point win. In N-O's final match of the evening, the Lady Warriors fell to Plainview in three sets, 21-25, 25-22 and 25-19. The first set was a back-and-forth battle between the two squads. A late 6-1 run by the Lady Warriors was not enough as Kylie Mosel ended the match with a kill. "We need to continue to practice hard," Hoefer noted. "We haven't had a practice where all 12 varsity girls have come together and built that team chemistry we are lacking right now. We're hoping to continue to play each game to build confidence. Ultimately, what matters is at the end of the season. We're going to learn from this loss so we can better ourselves at the end of the season." In the second match of the evening, Plainview defeated Bloomfield in two sets, 25-17 and 25-11 Both teams battled for the early momentum, but the Lady Pirates pulled away to win the first set. She was fourth overall," N-O Coach Rick Eickholt said. "And our other two young ladies ran really well today. Hailey and Sydney may have both run the best races that they have run. I was very impressed with what they did today." In the boys race, Warrior Cole Belitz ran a 16:54 to pick up 3rd place in the senior boys division and 4th overall. This crushes the previous school record for this course, which was 17:25, set back in 2003. Belitz ran 52 seconds faster this year than he did in Albion one year ago. "He scares the daylights out of me when we come through the first three-quarters of a mile and he's got as many bodies in front. But he knows what he's capable of doing. He knows when he can turn it on and cut it loose. He ran a real nice race. Also on the boys side, Griffin ran a heck of a race. It might be the best race he's ever run also. He was in the mid 18's on the full 5K course. We had a lot of positives today, up and down the line. Our freshmen boys ran well today, so I'm just very, very pleased. We need to continue to improve. We know that we have a huge task in front of us with our district competition, but we just have to continue to work hard, stay healthy and be ready for the challenge." The Falcons earned 13th place as a team. In addition to Bennett, EV runners were Damian Smith, Reed Bennett, Walter Furstenau, Brandon Evans, Colton Rystrom, Conner Klein and Dylan Wright. There were a lot of schools here today and the competition was tough. We have a lot of growing to do. We have a lot of rookies that this is their first time they've run all these courses so I think it totally makes a difference once you know what the course is like, how to run. I'm just really proud of their efforts." Both teams will compete again on Thursday in the West Holt Invitational at Atkinson.
