The Neligh-Oakdale girls and boys basketball teams split its home contests against Stuart Saturday.
In the boys game, the Warriors’ stifling defense led N-O to a 58-43 victory over Stuart. “Stuart is a talented bunch and they are well coached,” commented N-O boys mentor Ethan Larsen. “Coach (John) Miller is a very good coach. It feels to good knowing our boys were able to come out and win against a good team.” Tied at 2 in the opening quarter, the Warriors used a 10-2 run to claim a 12-4 lead late in the first. Hunter Charf netted two triples and Cole Belitz added 4 points during the run. The home squad continued to roll to start the second, extending its lead to 21-8 following an Austin Rice layup. The Broncos made their move with a 9-2 run, but a pair of layups by Belitz and Isiac Kurpgeweit gave the Warriors a 27-19 advantage at the break. A big run in the tail end of the third and into the fourth sealed the win for N-O (7-3). An 8-2 run pushed the maroon and white's lead to 47-28, as the Warriors remained perfect at home. “It feels good to get the home win again,” spoke N-O sophomore Julien Hearn. “Coach (Larsen) told us we had to work on turnovers, get good angles when we passed and make better passes.” The Warriors were opportunistic Saturday, turning 19 Bronco turnovers into 16 points. “Our defense was big tonight,” Larsen noted. “I was proud of our boys with how they played our defense and how they kept some of their main scorers from getting a lot of touches tonight. That was a big key to allowing us to be offensive and have fun at that end of the court.” Belitz led all scorers with 20 points. Hearn netted 16 points, Austin Rice accounted for a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, Kurpgeweit had 6 points and 9 boards and Charf pitched in 6 points and seven rebounds. “During practice we try to get everyone ball,” Hearn remarked. “It helps us know what we need to do during the games. In the varsity opener, the Lady Warriors rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime, but did not get over the hump in N-O’s 49-43 loss to Stuart in overtime. “I’ve never been prouder to be a Warrior than I am right now,” stated N-O girls coach Christy Knutson. “I saw a lot of determination, people stepping up and something I’ver been waiting to see all season. These girls played their hearts out. I needed that and I needed this game to see what they can do. They did exactly what we told them and they never gave up.” After Paige Furstenau's layup and pair of free throws gave the Lady Warriors a 4-2 lead in the first, the Lady Broncos used a 20-8 run to take control of the contest. A Brooke Frey layup and Haley Kerkman freebie cut Stuart's lead to 22-15 at the break. Trailing by 10 in the third, a Kerkman free throw and jumper made it a 7-point ball game going into the final stanza. The comeback was on, as N-O scored 14 of the next 15 points to take its first lead since early in the first. Claire Whitesel gave the Lady Warriors the lead, 37-36, on a 3-point play after a steal. “We told them not to give up,” Knutson recalled. “(Assistant coach) Tanner (Knutson) kept saying he believes in them, reassured them it is just 1 point at a time, they can do anything and finish as high as they want to. They needed to believe in themselves.” After a free throw by Abigail Tubbs knotted the game at 39 with 20 seconds remaining, N-O had a chance to win the contest with the final possession of regulation. Furstenau found an open Kerkman in front of the hoop, but the senior's attempt was off the mark. In overtime the Lady Warriors ran into foul trouble, as four of the five starters fouled out and Stuart pulled away for a 49-43 win. The defense picked up the pace and the offense followed in the second half. N-O (3-8) forced eight Lady Bronco turnovers in the fourth quarter and overtime, and turned it into 16 points. “That’s been something we’ve struggled,” Knutson said. “We’re the ones trying to catch up and aren’t the ones making things happen. The girls transitioned really well and we saw another side of the game that we haven’t been able to execute.” Furstenau led the way with 24 points, four rebounds, two assists and four steals. Kerkman recorded 7 points and five boards, Frey had 6 points and seven rebounds and Whitesel added 5 points and three assists. Neligh-Oakdale returns to action Tuesday when the Warriors travel to Osmond at 4 p.m. “These girls have never been in situations like these before,” Knutson added. “I told them this is just the beginning of what we needed. We needed a game like this so we can execute at the end of the season when it’s going to count. Being 3-8, games like this are going to make us into a better team.” Larsen hopes his squad can continue to grow and improve after completing their tough Christmas break schedule. “We’ve had a grueling Christmas break,” Larsen concluded. “The Wisner Holiday Tournament is a tough one. With that scheduling and the series of events, our boys have handled adversity very well. Protecting our home court is big and our boys take a lot of pride in that. Tonight was another example of them going out and defending, literally, they’re home court.” The Elgin Public/ Pope John and Bloomfield girls and boys basketball teams battled to a split Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Wolfpack surged past the Queen Bees, 57-40. Leading 13-12 after the first eight minutes of play, EPPJ (10-2) used a 34-18 run through the next two quarters to take control of the game. Bloomfield (4-10) was led by Brooklyn Eisenhauer's 10 points and seven rebounds. Alexandera Eisenhauer recorded 10 points, five boards, three assists, two steals and two blocks, while Michaela Johnson had 8 points and eight rebounds. It was scoring by committee with seven girls scoring at least 4 points, led by Allyson Wemhoff's 12 points. Ally Selting and Kirsten Krebs each netted 9 points, Lexi Bode and Kaylee Ramold each scored 8 points, Grace Rittscher tallied 6 points and Kayce Kallhoff added 4 points. In the boys contest, the Bees defeated the Wolfpack, 63-40. Leading by 3 after the first, Bloomfield (8-6) used a 46-26 run through the next three quarters to pull away for the win. Trenton Holz led the Bees with 16 points. Braden Eisenhauer accounted for 14 points, while Dade Davis and Adam Johnson each contributed 7 points. Adam Dreger led EPPJ (0-11) with 11 points and seven rebounds. R.J. Lierman and Conor Ramold each scored 10 points and Layne Bullock accumulated 5 points. Bloomfield travels to Plainview Friday at 6:30 p.m. Elgin Public/Pope John goes to Fullerton Tuesday at 4 p.m. It was all Elgin Public/Pope John from the start, as the EPPJ girls basketball team rolled to a 53-11 triumph over O'Neill St. Mary's Friday.
A 23-0 run in the first quarter was all the momentum the Lady Wolfpack needed to improve to 9-2 on the year. Kirsten Krebs led the way with 17 points and six rebounds. Allyson Wemhoff tallied 14 points and five steals, Kayce Kallhoff recorded 9 points, Harlie Bode and Kaylee Ramold each netted 4 points, Ally Selting had 3 points and Lexi Bode added 2 points. EPPJ travels to Bloomfield today at 1 p.m. The Elgin Public/Pope John wrestling squad made the long trip to Burwell to compete at the Burwell Invitational Friday.

EPPJ returns to action Friday as the Wolfpack travel to the S-E-M Invite in Summer at 11 a.m. The Clearwater/Orchard girls and boys basketball teams wrapped up its busy week with losses to West Holt Friday in Orchard.
The Lady Huskies surged past OC, 46-32, in the opening contest. “Coming in we knew we had to create a little bit of tempo,” stated West Holt girls coach Mike Pardun. “We used a full-court defense to get them out of rhythm and we tried to not make it a half-court game by getting up and down a little bit. For the most part, we did a pretty good job.” After Katie Stearns' layup cut the Lady Huskies' lead to 2 in the first quarter, West Holt ended the half on a 30-8 run. “Defensively we were just trying to keep them away from the basket,” Pardun continued. “They are pretty handy when they get around the basket. We challenged the outside shots and tried to end the possessions with rebounds and get them out in transition.” Trailing by 20, the Lady Cyclones rallied with a 12-4 fourth-quarter run, but ultimately fell to the Lady Huskies. “Defensively we did some different things,” commented OC girls coach Scott Leisy. “(Carlie) Wetzel is one of best offensive players in the conference. We did a good job on her. We just came flat and tired in the first half. We looked like a team that had played a lot of games in the past week. With the holiday tournament getting pushed back, it messes with your practice and rest time. We challenged them at halftime and we came out and won the second half. We’re not that far away from winning these games. The girls need to keep battling and fighting. We’ll get over the hump eventually.” West Holt (7-3) dominated the boards, 42-20, and scored 18 second-chance points. “We’re not a team that shoots a high percentage on our first shot,” Pardun said. “Through the year, we’ve professed to them we need to get on the boards and get second, and third, opportunities. Tonight we definitely did that. Our second-chance points were a big part of the game, and also just limiting them to one shot and done.” The recent strand of Lady Cyclone opponents have been some of the top teams in the area. The combined record of the last five opponents against the green and black is 43-7. “You hope you can carry over the experience you’re getting from these games,” Leisy said. “These were games we were not competitive in last year and the girls have really adjusted. They have taken the experiences from last year to this year, and carried it over to be more competitive. Now we just need to find a way to win. That’s the next step and we got a good Creighton team Tuesday night and Humphrey Lindsay/Holy Name is one of the best teams in D1. It doesn’t get any easier for a while.” Stearns led OC (2-9) with 17 points and four rebounds. Maryssa Long tallied 4 points and four boards, Taylor Sanne contributed 2 points, three rebounds, two steal and two assists and Avery Cheatum added 3 points, four rebounds and two steals. Nine different Lady Huskies scored Friday night, led by Wetzel’s double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Leighton Mlady recorded 7 points and nine boards, Peyton Randolph and Anna Albrecht each netted 6 points and Ashley Larby pitched in 5 points. “Scoring wise, I thought we had some different people step in,” Pardun noted. “Anna Albrecht came off the bench and scored 4 points in the matter of 30 seconds. It was a combination of our starters and our bench players coming in and doing a pretty good job of scoring as well.” In the boys contest, West Holt held on for a 59-56 victory over OC. “It was a matter of coming back after our holiday tournament where we weren’t happy with the way we played,” spoke West Holt boys coach Todd Hale. “We got back to the mentality that we’re going to play good defense, create tough shots and get out and run. We played looser than what we have been and that was a key.” It was a tightly, contested ball game in the first half. In the first 16 minutes of play, there was five ties and the largest lead was OC by 7. A big third quarter gave the Huskies the momentum going into the final stanza. West Holt used a 17-10 run to start the third. “We came out with a little special we put in,” Hale recalled. “We got a good look out of it and the kids did a good job of being patient. That led to us getting momentum and defensively we got stops. With a a good team like this, you need those mini runs. It was good, hard-fought game.” After a Garrison Hansen layup pushed the Huskies' lead to 48-41 Midway through the fourth, OC went on a 9-2 run to knot the game at 50 with a pair of Jacob Long free throws. “I was super proud of their effort,” remarked OC coach Jim Schutt. “It got to a point where they were up by 7 and that could have got to 10 or 12 pretty easy. Our guys picked it up and put ourselves in a position to win the basketball game at the end.” On the ensuing series, Aaron Kraus converted a basket and Drew a foul to put West Holt back ahead and Austin Wenner snagged the rebound off the missed freebie to give the Huskies a 4-point advantage with more than a minute remaining in the contest. OC drew within 3, but never came any closer and dropped to 7-3. “This conference (Niobrara Valley Conference) is just a battle every night,” Schutt added. “We beat a really good North Central team last night and then we had these guys coming in, back-to-back. It’s tough and Todd (Hale) always has them playing tough defense that makes things difficult in the half-court. I was proud pdf my kids. We didn’t shoot as well as we’ve been shooting, but it just came down to a couple of possession at the end. It could have been anyone’s ball game.” Despite the Cyclones only turning the ball over 10 times, West Holt (7-3) turned those limited miscues into 13 points. “That’s a big part of our game,” Hale said. “We need to play good enough defense to out pressure to create turnovers. We got some guys who are pretty fast and when we get in the open court, we usually win that foot race. Three players scored in double figures for OC, led by Ryan Wilhelm’s 19 points and seven boards. Long tallied 14 points, nine rebounds and five steals and Blake Hoke accounted for 14 points, four boards, two assists and two steals. The Huskies were led by Jordan Tasler’s 14 points. Hansen accumulated 13 points, Kooper Jelinke notched 10 points and Kraus added 7 points. West Holt hosts Elkhorn Valley today. “Elkhorn Valley is better this year,” Hale stated. “They have some good young players and good leadership at the senior level. This is our first conference back-to-back. We need to physically and mentally get ready to go. The guys will be ready to go.” The Lady Huskies tipoff with the Lady Falcons at 3:30 p.m. “They are a very good and veteran team,” Pardun said. “They have girls who have played a lot of basketball for them. With the short turnaround, it’s going to be tough. They play a 1-3-1 defense and that’s a defense we have not seen this year. It’s going to be a tough task. It’s a home game against a familiar opponent and hopefully our girls come out and compete.” Clearwater/Orchard travels to Creighton Tuesday at 4 p.m.. “We have to keep moving on offense,” Schutt concluded. “We’re going to play big, physical teams like these guys that are tough. We have to do those little things. Check out on rebounds, grab the ball and hit your free throws. Those little things add up to winning a ball game.” In two tight matchups, Neligh-Oakdale was able to hold off Plainview on Friday night to notch their third sweep in front of the home crowd.
The Lady Warriors topped Plainview, 46-42, and the N-O boys edged out the Pirates, 49-44. Neligh-Oakdale came out firing on all cylinders to start the girl's game, jumping out to an early 8-0 lead and held a 10-4 advantage at the end of the first. Plainview hit three treys in the first couple minutes of the second quarter to take their first lead of the game, 13-10. Trading buckets and a pair of and-ones from Claire Whitesel and Paige Furstenau swung the advantage back to the Lady Warriors at the half, 20-16. Plainview continued to hit from beyond the arc and cut N-O's lead to 2 heading into the final quarter, 33-31. More treys by the Lady Pirates gave them a 38-37 advantage with just 6 minutes to play. Some crucial buckets by Furstenau, Trinity Kurpgeweit and Brooke Frey put away the game in the final minutes. Furstenau led the Lady Warriors with 19 points, including 7-7 from the line, 4 assists and 3 steals. Kurpgeweit tallied 15 points and 9 rebounds, followed by Frey with 7 points and Whitesel with 5 points, 4 assists and 3 steals. Plainview drained 8 treys for 32 of their 42 points against Neligh-Oakdale. "We watched probably eight of their games and we did not see the 3-point shot," Coach Christy Knutson said. "We were totally prepared for their inside game, so that's what we've been concentrating on. They shot lights out from the outside and that caught us off guard a bit, but the girls transitioned well, coming back and doing what they needed to do." Knutson said she was pleased with the way her team played hard until the end. "We haven't been in that tight of a game where we were on top and we had to finish," she said. "They did a lot of positive things that we've been trying to work on. Teamwork was essential tonight, a lot of positive things we needed from the girls. We all needed this game, this win. They did everything that we asked them to, and I saw so many good things. I'm really proud of them." In the boys game, it started off with the teams trading buckets before Neligh-Oakdale took a 9-5 first quarter lead. The Warriors opened it up a bit in the second, leading by 10 points until Plainview hit a trey right before the halftime buzzer, cutting N-O's lead to 23-16. It was a near replay in the third as the Warriors surged ahead for another lead, only to be cut down by a Pirate three to end of the third quarter, 36-31. Plainview closed the gap early in the fourth and then took a 1-point advantage halfway through the quarter. Austin Rice hit a three to regain the lead, but the Pirates answered, tying it up 40-all. Cole Belitz drove in for two, giving the Warriors the 42-40 lead before Plainview again tied it up at 42. Belitz hit a jumper on the other end to give the 44-42 advantage to N-O. With 55 seconds left in the game, the Pirates were forced to foul and Belitz and Rice sealed the win from the charity stripe. Belitz and Rice led the Warriors with 20 points apiece, and Rice also grabbed 10 boards for a double-double. Isiac Kurpgeweit scored 5 points while pulling down 12 rebounds and blocking 3 shots. Julien Hearn added 4 points to round out the scoring. Heading into the game, Coach Ethan Larsen said he knew a couple of Plainview's bigs "were going to be a handful," but his team "was up for the task." "We thought it would be best to just pack it in and make them prove it on the outside of the arc, and they did that a couple times," Larsen said. "They hit some shots, which we expected might happen, but ultimately, we did a good job with all of our guys protecting the paint and minimizing their bigs getting a lot of touches and opportunities." He said the Warriors had faced adversity before and those have turned into learning opportunities for his team. "Even in a close game when the opposing team is hitting some shots, our kids remained pretty steadfast in their confidence of our game," Larsen said. "I think having those experiences early in the season is only going to make us better and tonight was one of those nights." The OC boys squad held on to defeat the Knights, 57-50. After claiming a 16-7 advantage to start the game, OC (8-2) saw its lead dwindle down to 5 heading into the break. The Cyclones used a 13-8 run to push their lead to 10 heading into the final stanza. The final run was enough to give OC its fifth win in six tries. Blake Hoke led way with 23 points, eight rebounds, three assists and six steals. Ryan Wilhelm recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards, Gage Clifton and Jacob Long each netted 8 points and Chris Kester added 5 points, four rebounds, three assists and six steals. In the girls contest, the Lady Cyclones fell to North Central, 47-19. A 7-0 hole to start the game was too much for OC (2-8) to overcome. Clearwater/Orchard wraps up its busy week today, as the Cyclones welcome West Holt to Orchard for 6:30 and 8 p.m. games. The Clearwater/Orchard wrestling team remained perfect in dual matches this season, with a pair of wins over Madison and Elkhorn Valley Thursday.
“You’re always nervous when you come out of Christmas break, especially when you miss two days of practice and the Ord Duals,” stated OC mentor Dan Roeber. “We spent a lot of time just working technique and fixing things we struggled with in the first half of the season. Not that we fixed it all, but we saw some improvement tonight. That’s a huge win against EV.” After the Cyclones and Falcons both disposed of the Dragons easily, the two Antelope squads met on the mat. EV’s Adam Miller opened the match with a third-period pin over Rafe Grebin at 126 pounds. Reed Bennett scored a fall over James Kester in their 132-pound match, giving EV a 12-0 lead. OC got on the board thanks to a third-period pin by Tyson Rix at 138. “Ty Rix came out and got a win tonight that was huge for him,” Roeber noted. “He showed some excitement. Sometimes we have to curve down the Elkhorn Valley dual, but at the same time it was huge for him to get that win and that confidence. Hopefully that’s his spark he needs for the rest of the season.” Prestin Vondra (145) and Houston Marino (152) each tallied falls for their respective teams in the next two matches. After a Josh McFarland win by forfeit at 160, Mitchell Petersen recorded a technical fall over OC senior Austin Pokorny, 16-1, at 170 pounds. Trailing 29-12, the Cyclones began their comeback. Codey Snider picked up a huge pin over EV senior Brock Schaecher in the second period of their 182-pound match. “That’s probably the 20th time Codey and Brock have wrestled in their four years of high school,” Roeber said. “They know each other really well and they’re probably 50-50 in their career. Brock has got the best of him the last three or four times. We preached to Codey all week, go out and wrestle your match. Don’t let him dictate where you want to be. He took advantage and he rolled through. He does what Codey does, he’s got good hips and is a senior and has put the time in.” Clay Thiele followed up Snider’s pin with a fall of his own, over Gavyn Clause in the first period. Donaven Nolze cut the deficit to one with a 10-1 major decision over Caden Reikofski at 220. In a big swing match, seniors Tommie Peed and Christian Yaw took to the mats for their 285-pound battle. “My win helped but it came down to the heavyweights to see who came out with the win,” recalled Snider. “Tommie came up big in that win. We were hoping Donnie (Nolze) could have gotten a pin against his kid, but a win is a win.” Scoreless after two periods, Peed elected to take bottom and while trying to escape, reversed Yaw and turned the Falcon heavyweight to his back, to score the pin and pick up the win. “Tommie Peed and Christian have wrestled three or four times in the past couple of years, and we’ve fortunate enough to win everyone of those,” Roeber mentioned. “They know each other and Tommie took it into the third period where we needed it and was able to get the pin. Our seniors came up with huge wins and that’s what they’re there for.” OC’s Anthony Ferris (106) and EV’s Hunter Bennett (113) each won their matches by forfeit to end the night. After dropping five of the first seven matches, the Cyclones won five of the final six matches to win the match, 40-35. “Overall we had a couple of matches that didn’t go our way that we expected to go our way, and that was the difference in the dual,” commented EV coach Joey Tegeler. “We know we’re not a dual team, but we have to win the matches we expect to win. That’s why we lost the dual tonight.” Going 2-0 Thursday night for the Falcons included Hunter Bennett, Vondra, Reed Bennett, McFarland, Petersen and Miller. Hunter Klinetobe (138), Michael Glynn (152), Schaecher, Clause and Yaw each recorded wins in EV’s 65-6 triumph over Madison. OC’s Rix, Marino, Snider, Thiele, Peed and Ferris won both of their matches. Grebin, Alex Arroyo (145), Pokorny, James Kester (132), David Arroyo won their matches against the Dragons, in the Cyclones’ 66-12 victory. “We wrestled great, but we need to work on being more physical and in better shape,” Snider remarked. “We need to focus on who we got during that match. We’re hoping to keep it going. It comes down to out lightweights. They are all young. Our heavyweights all have been wrestling. Our lightweights just need to work on technique and all that.” Elkhorn Valley competes at the Central City Invitational Saturday at 10 a.m. “That is motivation,” Tegeler spoke. “The wins in January don’t matter. It’s February we’re going after. It’s motivation for our guys. I don’t like seeing them lose, but for some of those guys, maybe a loss is good for them.” Clearwater/Orchard travels to the Winside Invitational Saturday at 9:30 a.m. “The biggest thing is the young guys, who we’ve been harping on to pick up the pace, get going and fix things in the wrestling room,” Roeber concluded. “Maybe not all of them got wins tonight, but they showed they can wrestle with some good caliber kids. We may not have come out on top or wrestle a full six minutes, but we were working on those small goals. It’s building their momentum and confidence.” Members of the Elkhorn Valley and Clearwater/Orchard club wrestling squads displayed their talents in front of a packed house at Thursday's tri-match.

"There were some bright spots tonight, but still some areas where we have a long ways to go," coach Gary Davis said. "We have a couple who have just worked their tail off, and it showed tonight. We have great leadership, and that's the main thing. Some of our best kids didn't even get to wrestle tonight." Davis said he's please where the Warriors are at this point, but there's a lot more work to do. He credited his seniors for their leadership in preparing the team for the second half of the season. "Since the beginning of the year, where we were getting first, second and third, so I've been nothing but pleased," Davis said. "The whole key is we have to improve to get to where we want to be in February. That's where these guys' attitude is, and we have to keep improving." Full results will be added as soon as they are available. Neligh-Oakdale wrestling held its parents night in between matches Thursday during the Warrior home triangular with Ainsworth and Twin River.
