Nearly three dozen firefighters were called to a chimney fire around 8:40 p.m. Sunday night in Neligh.
The home at 810 East 4th Street is owned by Lloyd and Coleen Meis. According to officials on scene, firefighters are continuing to look for hot spots in the house. With the wind chill, the current temperature feels like -8 in Neligh. No injuries have been reported at this time. The Warrior teams went 1-1 on the road in Madison on Saturday. A buzzer-beater by Madison edged out the Neligh-Oakdale girls 46-44, while the boys picked up a 58-47 win over the Dragons after playing a strong fourth quarter. In the girls game, Madison went on a 9-0 run before N-O put up any points on the board, giving them an 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. They extended their lead to 25-12 by halftime. The Lady Warriors fought back in the second half, but the early deficit was too much to overcome. "Madison really got off to a hot start and shot the ball well," Coach Ron Beacom said. "We didn't bring the same intensity level that they did to start the game. Even with digging the early hole though, the girls really fought back hard and played a really good second half. We had the game tied twice and got beat on an 18 foot buzzer beater." Kinsley Klabenes led N-O with 20 points, followed by Bailey Frey with 9, Danae Smith and Jayda Chance with 6 each, Alexis Jensen 2 and Whitney Beacom 1. Girls scores by quarters: N-O 8 4 14 18 - 44 Madison 18 7 8 13 - 46 In boys action, Madison came out firing 3-pointers, giving them a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Warriors were able to find some answers and came back to get an 11-point victory. "We really got smacked in the face that first quarter with them hitting 5 three pointers, but give credit to the kids they adjusted the defense and we played the matchups that allowed us to come out on top," Coach Frank Gade said. Alex Kerkman and Tyson Belitz led the Warriors with 16 points each, followed by Chris Bentley with 14, Pepper Marchant 7 and Grant White 5. Boys scores by quarters: N-O 10 14 12 22 - 58 Madison 17 10 10 10 - 47 January is national mentoring month and the Neligh-Oakdale Teammates Mentoring Program is participating in a campaign aimed at expanding opportunities to connect more young people with caring adults in the Neligh community.
There is a powerful mentoring effect demonstrated by research and the experiences of young people who are connected to a mentor in their life. Research has shown that when matched through a quality mentoring program, mentors can play a powerful role in providing young people with the tools to make responsible decisions, stay focused and engaged in school. TeamMates hosted a walking taco bar at the N-O home game last night. Neligh-Oakdale currently has 24 students matched with a volunteer mentor through the Teammates Mentoring Program. They were recognized during halftime. Students meet once a week for approximately 45 minutes to an hour during the school day with their mentor. Gloria Christiansen and Leonard Miller shared why they are TeamMates mentors. "I love relationships with young people. This gives me an opportunity to share some of my talents and to listen and learn from them," Christiansen said. "I think all of us need moments and times to talk to someone about things that are going on in our lives. I actually learn as much from my mentee as some people may think she learns from me." Leonard Miller explained why he believes mentorship is important. "I think everyone has a mentor whether they admit it or not at some point in their life. Somebody can make an impact on a person's life. Maybe they need some direction. It's worthwhile," Miller said. Teammates also has an active board of directors. Board members include: Andy Beyer, Jenny Higgins, Susie Loofe, Becky Kerkman, Bill Mowinkel, Carrie Pitzer, Kay Schilling, Steph Wanek and Erin Whitesel. Denise Gunderson and April Knust serve as coordinators for the program. Raffle tickets for a 2016 Artic Cat 4-wheeler are on sale now in Neligh.

Neligh-Oakdale senior Garett Allemang was named Nebraska USA Wrestling's Class D Wrestler of the Week.
The son of Tom and Rochelle, Allemang won the 152-pound division of the Amherst Invite and was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Jan. 9 meet. Several Antelope County residents attended President Barack Obama's speaking event in Omaha on Wednesday, just one day after giving his final State of the Union Address.
Eight thousand tickets were released for the event and several Antelope County residents were on hand, including 2011 Neligh-Oakdale graduate Rebekah Kuhfal, who was a volunteer at the event. Kuhfal attends UNO and used the event to help fill her volunteer hour requirements for her scholarship. "This is seriously a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I had, volunteering and seeing the president," Kuhfal said. "There have been plenty of speeches in Omaha by past presidents, but not by a president in office. So I think it was kind of cool I was able to see that. Kind of mind blowing - that's half of what I was thinking about during the speech." Kuhfal said she wasn't sure what Obama would speak about and said she thought people came to hear from the president in general, not just what we would say about specific topics. "I think it was the community and know he was here, seeing him and hearing what he had to say. He had good things to say; it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," she said. Kuhfal actually did more than just volunteer. She helped provide a little entertainment by starting the wave. Neligh resident and Keystone XL pipeline fighter Art Tanderup of Neligh compared the event to that of a Nebraska football game. "You would almost think you were at a Husker game. I mean it was so exciting in here. It was loud, people were excited," he said. "I never heard one booing-type comment from the crowd or negative comment yelled out. We didn't have that kind of thing here today; people appreciated what the president has done and really appreciated the fact that he decided to come to Omaha today," Tanderup said. Tanderup said hearing Obama was very special, after all he is the president who rejected the pipeline through Nebraska. "With climate change, I'm very pleased to hear that he is extremely well versed with what's happening to our world and how we need to step up to stop it," he said. Following his speech in Omaha, President Obama boarded a plane for Louisiana for another speaking engagement. The Neligh-Oakdale FCCLA will be hosting a canned food drive next week!
The food drive will be held at the Neligh-Oakdale vs. Clearwater-Orchard basketball game on Tuesday, January 19th at Neligh. In support of both communities, they will be donating all the items collected to the Antelope County Food Pantry. Neligh-Oakdale Elementary students watched a fun performance this week, while also learning a lesson about bullying.
Kids on the Block, a puppet show that travels to schools around the state, presented an assembly on how to handle bullying for Neligh-Oackdale Elementary. Skits were performed in the high school gym for grades 3-6 and at Westward for grades pre-k through 2nd with discussion time following. The group is sponsored by the Nebraska Elks Association. A transient was arrest early Wednesday morning at a Neligh convenience store.
According to the Neligh Police Department, Geovontey Redeemer, 38, was arrested at Casey's General Store around 5:15 a.m. The Neligh Police received a call about a disturbance. Neligh Police Chief Mike Wright responded. Redeemer was arrested on the charges of disturbing the peace and criminal trespassing. He was then transported to the Antelope County Law Enforcement Center. The Neligh-Oakdale girls and boys swept Osmond on the home court Tuesday night.
The Lady Warriors finished strong for a 55-46 win over Osmond, while the N-O boys edged out the Tigers, 59-52. "Solid bounce back game after a disappointing one on Saturday," Coach Frank Gade said. "We still have some work to do moving forward but I was proud of how we responded tonight against a good team." Boys scores by quarter: N-O 17 15 12 15 - 59 Osmond 10 11 18 13 - 52 Neligh-Oakdale will have another home game on Thursday when they host Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family. The Antelope County Board of Supervisors moved to designate Antelope County "Livestock Friendly" at Tuesday's meeting.
The Nebraska Livestock Friendly County program is a voluntary program, started in 2003, that recognizes counties that actively support the livestock industry. Directed by Nebraska Legislature, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture uses the program to assist counties and agricultural producers to promote the livestock industry. The program was brought to the supervisors attention at a board meeting last month by two Antelope County residents who supported it. The issue was heard at a public hearing last week and was continued Tuesday morning after several questions were raised about the program. Supporter Robert Johnston, of Orchard, addressed the board answering some of those questions. "The whole program is really set up to be a promotional, a program to promote the state, to promote the livestock industry," Johnston said. Many local residents were also in attendance at the meeting in support of the Livestock Friendly program. The board voted unanimously to sign the resolution and designate the county Livestock Friendly. Three Neligh-Oakdale basketball players were named to the All-Tournament Team during the Shootout On The Elkhorn Holiday Basketball Tournament at Wisner-Pilger.

KATE ASMUS-PIE HUNTER SCHWEERS-PONCA After years of discussion and taking bids, Neligh-Oakdale decided now is the time to move forward with a nearly half-million-dollar track.
The current track is in disarray and considered unsafe and unusable, leaving the entire Antelope County without a track. The Neligh-Oakdale Board of Education unanimously voted Monday night to install a new six-lane track for $419,000. Longtime Neligh-Oakdale track coach Rick Eickholt has been pushing for a new facility for over a decade. “It’s been a process. I’m extremely excited that the school board decided to take action and do what they’ve done as far as renovating our track,” Eickholt said. “I’m very grateful for all of the work and efforts they have put in and the research to find out what we needed, also very thankful and very grateful to anyone who has donated or played any part in making what they voted on this evening possible.” Interim Superintendent Bill Kuester said the $419,000 does not include improving the drainage of the track, which he said is part of the reason it deteriorated years ago. Eickholt and board member Krista Schindler are on the community committee seeking donations for the track. Although the school has now officially agreed to foot the bill for the nearly half-million dollar track, funds are still needed for hurdles and other equipment for the student-athletes. Schindler said the committee has raised $18,577 to date. With the money raised years ago by former board president Jeff Carpenter, the track account now has $31,800. After much discussion on whether to building a post-tension concrete or asphalt track, Schindler made the motion to move forward with the concrete track. Chris Ford seconded and the motion carried 5-0. Eickholt said there are lots of reasons why Neligh-Oakdale needed a new track, besides the obvious safety issues. “Just from a competitive standpoint, just being able to practice daily on a safe facility to give our kids the same competitive edge that area schools have. I truly think it has hurt our participation level in past years just because of the condition of the facility," he said. With the new track, Neligh-Oakdale will be able to host meets again, although not conference or district meets since the new track will only be six lanes. Although the board of education did move forward with a new track for Neligh-Oakdale, they are still accepting donations. A Neligh-Oakdale graduate has recently received her Nursing degree from Clarkson College.
Leah Anderson of Neligh, Neb. graduated on Saturday, Dec. 12. Anderson received a Master of Science degree in Nursing with a family nurse practitioner focus. She was a member of the Clarkson College Omicron Epsilon Chapter Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and of the National Society of Leadership and Success Sigma Alpha Pi Interdisciplinary Honor Society. The title of her capstone was “Effects of Nebraska Legislative Bill 107 on the Nurse Practitioner Student's Intention of Independent Rural Practice.” Each semester a subcommittee of the Alumni Association of Clarkson College Board evaluates the Capstone abstracts that the Master’s degree seeking students submit prior to graduation. The Alumni Board awarded Leah the third place certificate for her abstract “Effects of Nebraska Legislative Bill 107 on the Nurse Practitioner Student’s Intention of Independent Rural Practice”. Leah is the daughter of Larry Anderson and Carol Anderson. The granddaughter of Robert and Laura Mae Spieker and the late Leslie and Dorothy Anderson. The power has been restored in in the Neligh-Oakdale Gym after an outage over the weekend.
According to interim superintendent Bill Kuester, the power was on as of 8:05 a.m. Monday. An electrician from Flenniken Electric worked with custodian Curt Madsen to correct the issue over the weekend. Power had not yet been restored during Sunday’s basketball games and construction lights were used to light the gym. Kuester said three connections on the outside of the building were replaced to correct the problem. “We appreciate the understanding that everyone went through in handling this situation,” Kuester said. Neligh-Oakdale freshman Cameron Wilkinson and senior Garett Allemang both won their weight divisions Saturday as the Warriors finished third at Amherst.

State Farm Agent Melissa Smith will be moving to her new location on Highway 275 next week.
With the completion of Mill Pointe Development, State Farm will be moving to their new office on January 11. The new address of the business will be at 306 L Street, Suite 201. Melissa Smith of Neligh assumed the role as State Farm Agent on January 1, 2014. The Antelope County board of supervisors is currently makings steps toward becoming “Livestock Friendly," a highly debated topic at this week's meeting.
The Nebraska Livestock Friendly County program is a voluntary program, started in 2003, that recognizes counties that actively support the livestock industry. Directed by the Nebraska Legislature, Nebraska Department of Agriculture uses the program to assist counties and agricultural producers to promote the livestock industry. The program was brought to the supervisors attention at a board meeting last month by two Antelope County residents who supported the idea. "There are two main reasons that I'm in favor of it," one of the supporter said, "to say thank you to all the livestock producers in the county; I think we should recognize them." "I've been to meetings where the governor and the director of Ag have had the map of Nebraska behind them, and they show all the counties that have the Livestock Friendly designation," he said, "When I'm sitting in the crowd, I look at that and I'm thinking Antelope County isn't one of them." 35 of Nebraska’s 93 counties are currently Livestock Friendly, The most recent county to become Livestock Friendly was Hayes in September, 2015. The issue was heard at a public hearing Tuesday morning. Several residents spoke in favor of it, believing it would promote economic development. However, board members were concerned about the possibility of losing the local control of zoning. "I think it's going to give you a voice to hold on to your local control. . . ," one resident said, "you're going to have community support." Another supporter who works at a local livestock operation addressed the board saying he wouldn't want to take control away from them. "I'm just for livestock," he said, "I'm not looking for something to make us go above and beyond what we are or to override your guy's power. We all want to get along." According to the NDA, A county designated Livestock Friendly, through its own zoning regulations, would retain control of zoning for any livestock operation. After much discussion, the board decided to review the resolution, and gather more information. The item was tabled until next Tuesday’s meeting.
