Authorities said late Monday night they are "working to verify the identity or identities of the individuals that may have been inside the vehicle."
Nebraska State Patrol Investigative Services Lt. Dan Wilson, Troop B-Norfolk said a report of a vehicle on fire came in at about 3 p.m. He said Pierce Fire & Rescue, along with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, responded and found a pickup fully engulfed in flames located in the middle of bean field about 9 miles west and 1 mile north of Pierce, near the Pierce-Neligh Road. "The fire and rescue squads were called out to extinguish the fire. As they were doing so they noticed what appeared to be human remains inside the vehicle," Wilson said. The Nebraska State Patrol and the State Fire Marshal’s Office were called in to investigate at that point, according to a press release from the Nebraska State Patrol. Wilson said the owners of the property east of 855 Road and 539 Avenue - where the pickup came to its final resting spot - were the reporting parties who notified authorities of the fire. Wilson said the Nebraska State Patrol said they "are investigating all avenues pertaining to a vehicle fire" and would not comment on whether the fire is being ruled a homicide at this time. “From here at this point in time, what we’ll do is perform autopsies that’ll be done in Sioux City, Iowa in the near future. In conjunction with that, we’re hoping to verify the identity or identities of those inside the vehicle," Wilson said. The Nebraska State Patrol said no other information would be released Monday night.
