Law enforcement are currently investigating a suspicious death near the Pierce-Neligh Road that was discovered after a vehicle fire was reported to dispatchers. Shortly after 3 p.m. Monday, Pierce Fire and Rescue responded to a vehicle on fire 9 miles west and 1 mile north of Pierce. According to a press release from the Nebraska State Patrol, when Pierce County deputies arrived at the fire they found a vehicle engulfed in flames. Volunteer firefighters with the Pierce Fire Department worked to extinguish the blaze and upon suppressing the flames, observed human remains in the cab of the pick-up. At that time, the Nebraska State Patrol and State Fire Marshall’s Office were called to investigate. “At this time the vehicle is still smoldering and too hot to get inside,” said Investigative Services Lt. Dan Wilson, Troop B-Norfolk. “Once we are able to make entry, we will work to identify the remains and determine what caused the vehicle to catch fire.” Pierce County Attorney Verlyn Luebbe, Sheriff Rick Eberhart and Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol are treating the site of the fire as a crime scene. Lt. Dan Wilson with the State Patrol says that the pickup is in the middle of a field and they believe human remains are inside the smoldering vehicle. Investigators are allowing some time for the fire to extinguish itself before making any conclusive findings as they wait to go though any evidence on scene. This story will be updated when more information becomes available. |
